Hi everyone. I decided it was time to do something about the large number of apples i had in my crisper drawer. Thing is, they are not organic. I had bought a stash of organic ones from the caterer at work who offered them at 4 for a dollar. so the non organic ones are just sitting there, getting grainy in my fridge.
So, I thought my options, and went for it. I sat and peeled a pile of apples, kinda imagined myself like the punished potato peeler on some old ship....but then i tossed a couple with fresh squeazed lemon, and sliced them for the dehydrator. The other half I popped in the food processer with some of the same aformentioned lemon, and then poured that onto a teflex sheet. (these are quite sweet apples, they are a Gala variety. Not quite as sweet as Pink Ladies, but near so, so I guessed they would only get sweeter as they dried. That is why I didn't add fruit juice or honey.)
The apples are now slowly transforming in the dehydrator. I am excited, since I haven't made dehydrated fruit before. When I got the dehydrator last year I did a lot of veggie stuff, but no fruit....The last time i even attempted something like this was 5th grade, (20 something years ago!) and it was bananas, and that was in a sun dryer....
DOes anyone have any suggestions for using up apples in other ways? I was thinking of making apple sauce. Or a pie filling...
I am finally ordering Alissa's book tonight, I had been waiting till I had extra mad money to spend...perhaps she has some recipes in there?
Thanks.
Cassy
