If a receipe calls for sprouted garbonzo beans do the beans need to be raw beans and if so where do you buy raw beans? Or do they just need to be organic? Or neither matters they just need to be sprouted to make the live?

Right now I'm sprouting plain ol' dried garbanzo beans that I bought a while back and they're sprouting just fine. These were just bought at Walmart, I think, in the dried beans section. You should probably use organic beans if you can find them -- really the most important thing is to look for beans that are meant for sprouting or cooking, rather than planting. (Beans/seeds for planting may be treated with chemicals).

You can buy organic dry garbanzos at any large grocery store. My Wal-Mart doesn't carry them.

Soak them overnight & then rinse good & watch the little tails grow. They only take a day or so to sprout as any longer & they tasted very "earthy." :)

Just to clarify, the beans I got at Walmart weren't organic. I had them in my cupboard and figure I might try to sprout them. I didn't expect them to be viable, since I bought them a year and a half ago, but they're sprouting anyways! :D

That is so cool that they are still sprouting after that amount of time. :D

I know! It really took me by surprise!

I have lentils sprouting too (and they're growing like mad), but those are ones I bought just this weekend. I have some older lentils that I bought around the same time as the garbanzos, so I'll probably try sprouting those for kicks too! (And, ya know, make something with them if they DO sprout... lol) :D

Garbanzos and lentils are two foods that I usually only sprout overnight. I have many seeds I use for green sprouts, like radish, broccoli, alfalfa, clover, etc., whereas with lentils and chickpeas I mostly just want them to be "awake" and soft. And as we recently discussed on another thread about hummus, the longer chickpeas sprout the sharper they taste, which some people don't care for.

Thanks Shivananda for the info about longer sprouting Garbanzos tasting sharper. I will definately just soak overnight next time I make hummus, as it was a little sharp. :p
