Can someone tell me if I soak macademia nuts for 10 hours will they be soft enough for the FP. I don't have a blender and I want to make ranch dressing so I want it to be creamy. Also when soaking almond's for milk what do you do with the left over pulp?

PLEASE do NOT soak mac nuts, it ruins the beautiful flavor, same with pine nuts, walnuts and pecans, if you MUSt soak them, only do it for about 10 minutes.
but there is no need to soak these nuts, they don't have hardly any enzyme inhibitors.
the almond pulp I feed to my dog, some people toss it, and some add it to crackers or make cookies, I've never cared for anything made with it.
But,my hubby keeps trying to find a decent use for this stuff as we have lots, I make a big pitchur or almond pulp every couple of days and I'm the only one drinking it. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Soak almonds overnight.
The guideline for whether to soak nuts is so simple --
* If the nut has a hard shell, they don't need to be soaked.
* If the nut has a soft shell, you should soak them.
See how easy?
The thing is, most of us buy nuts already shelled, and some people have never seen nuts the way they come from the trees. So, they don't know whether the shells are hard or soft. If you don't know how nuts are grown in Nature, do a little searching on the internet to find a description or picture. And ... get away from the city more! :D
Oh - always soak seeds to germinate and make digestible. If I'm wrong on this, someone please correct me.

rawpriestess, where did you get your information about the small amount of enzyme inhibitors found in those particular nuts?

RP, thanks for this info! I've been wondering about walnuts, love them, and the thought of having to soak them first was driving me crazy. Never seemed to have any soaked when I wanted to eat them. So this is great to know.
And tell Dragggon not to give up, we're still waiting anxiously for that masterpiece of an almond pulp recipe I'm SURE he will eventually come up with. :) Cookies don't work with it? In my mind that seems like the best use, so if that doesn't work... hmmmm. I'll leave him to it then... LOL

I'm one of those people kind of in the dark about the shells my nuts come in. :o Now, way back when, when I was a kid we always used to crack nuts and eat them at Christmas. I would have guessed almond for a hard shell but now that I think back, they are very easy to open compared to other nuts so I guess that's what is meant as "soft". But I can't think of any other nuts with soft shells, so what other nuts need to be soaked besides almonds? I know brazil nuts have a very hard shell. I could never open them as a kid even with the nut cracker, always got my dad to do it, LOL.

I am dredging this one up from the archive as this is a current question of mine -
I have seen many nuts in their shells and how does one determine if the shell is hard or soft? As RawFoodieMom states, almonds appear to have a hard shell to me.
Also, what is the original source of this information of hard shell vs. soft shell?
