Hi there! Just wanted to introduce myself to you all as it's my first post and my first day 100% raw! WOW - what a day. My name is Catherine and I'm in Los Angeles - I live with my dear boyfriend, who loves to grill steaks and eat pizza, eat fast food and hamburgers. I too have enjoyed eating these foods and have suffered the consequences! Though I've been about 60% raw just becaue I love salads so much and eat 2 per day almost everyday, I know that making the switch to 100% will have better results on my health.

I'm weening myself of of medications that I've been taking for Hypothyroid. The steroids puffed up my face so much I don't recognize myself.

I am making the move to be med free and Raw! Yahoooo! I'm excited about it. I already feel great today on day one. I've placed many water bottles at all the places I go in the house so there is always a bottle to sip from.

I know there will be temptation when my boyfriend comes home and is ready to eat his dinner.....I thought about going for a walk up the street and back to take my mind of the food he is eating. My trouble is that I enjoy social eating even when I'm full. And I usually want what ever they are having! He enjoys taking me out to eat - and his choices are usually greasy breakfast diners and other places like that - any thoughts on what to eat when at restaurants like that?? He's not oppsed to going to other restaurants - but I'm new to the area and still looking for places that have more variety that I can eat.

Thanks so much - looking forward to the challenge and to meeting you online.

Hi...glad to have you here...I am on day 8 and I am doing really well...I watched Alissa's DVD's and now I am going through her book. It is great!! I am also getting a supply of foods I need and that takes a little time. I get a few things here and there. I just got a dehydrator but I haven't used it yet. I am still waiting on my food processor. I am enjoying fruits, smoothies, salads and some kind of gooey stuff I throw together in a bowl and eat with a spoon. I put almond butter, few nuts, raisins, banana and honey!! This is like eating cookie dough...yummmmm

Hope all goes well for you on your first week...hang tuff....we can do it!!!

Joyce :) :)

Thanks for introducing yourself and telling me how you are eating - as I JUST purchased her book online a minute ago it will be a few days of just eating the same ol stuff I've got in the fridge which will become uninspired soon I'm sure.

I'm afraid of bananas - because I've been eating no carb and they have been off of my list of foods for so long - but I see them in almost every smoothie I read - I wonder if there is another way to make smoothies that will be as thick as when you use bananas??

Hope to get to know you and share in the process!

Bananas are another disaccharide. Double sugar. I know so many raw foodies eat them like they're going out of style. I have to avoid these kinds of things or I get really crabby. Sugar sugar sugar...

I add soaked nuts to my smoothies for substance. I like almonds because they're bland but can be a little too hard even after being soaked. Walnuts add a bit of nutty flavor you may not like. You've got to be extra careful in blending so you don't get a chunk to choke on.

The best carbs to eat are fruit carbs and whole bananas are great. Your body runs on carbs so don't be afraid to eat bananas and other sweet fruits. If you don't get enough carbs you'll be overeating fats and that's not a good thing.

Bad carbs are your processed, cooked carbs and grains which are much higher on the glycemic index than whole fresh rips fruits.

I appreciate the info on bananas and the nuts I can substitute for them in smoothies.

I do notice a tendency to grab for fatty foods such as nuts - in between meals to give me a full feeling. I know bananas are ultimately good carbs - but I think too much sugar for me.

WE'll see how it goes!

Today I feel bloated and bigger - but I think it's just my body freaking out!

Hi there and welcome :)

maybe you could put an avocado in your smoothies, just to make it more creamy and thicker... the colour won't be so pretty I bet, but I don't think it will change the taste much... haven't tried this yet, maybe it's better to ask these kind of questions at the rawfood thread, lots more people can help you out when you post questions overthere... good luck and see you around! :D

Hi, catherinethegreat!

Welcome! I know how hard it is to get over social eating, I'm in the middle of that, too. If you find some raw restaurants (or even vegan ones that have raw dishes) things will get a lot better, I'm sure.

Blessings on your journey!

My husband and kids still eat their favorite foods, and I cook them. They refuse to go raw. I am working on weaning off the meat for them quietly. Except hubby as he is a ALL meat no veggie person. So as I am cooking their meals, or around them when they are snacking on chips or whatever, I just keep reminding myself of the rewards at the end (no pain, more energy, healthy long life). 99% of the time it works. And when it doesn't and I can't stand it, a nibble usually does it because the smell is better than the taste. I think my taste buds are getting sensitive to the fats and whatever else. Cause it will smell so good, but when I bite into it.. it doesn't taste as good as I remembered.

Anyway, we are here to support you whenever you need it. If you feel the craving or the smells overcome you and you want to cave... log onto this board for inspiration...

Best of health
