What's the deal on them? Are they raw or not (wanting to make cookie recipe with them...)? Thanks.

Here's the short versions... most rolled oats on the market are cooked. Oat grats (hulled oats) are sometimes cooked, but can be found raw.

For a more complete discussion, read this thread http://www.rawfoodtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11360&highlight=groats
and previous others you can find using the Search Key (the banana symbol)

I find raw hulled oat groats at my local health food market. Just bought some this afternoon to make more oatmeal cookies. You are usually found in the bulk bin section.

Rolled oats are processed, don't buy anything pre- packaged unless it's done by the market itself. Read labels carefully and ask a sales person even if it says raw.

Hope this helps !

i went onto the bob's red mill website and queried them to death over these. then i just ordered them. can't wait till they come so i can incorporate them into my raw granola, which i can't keep enough of in my home.

they said they are not steamed, and they said i should soak them (which i do with my buckwheat groats, anyway). then i can smush them in my food processor. i amy also try crushing them in my food processor or vitamix first and then soaking. i don't have one of those oat rollers i've read about here.

i am also going to try to make some oat sprouts out of some of them. that seems to be to me a true test of viability, don't you think? that's what i do with all the trader joe's stuff. have yet to get an almond to sprout from their alomond, or anyone else's yet. but i have sprouted their sunflower seeds. not the pumpkin seeds. :(

bob's red mill is very user friendly about responding to questions.

Hey surfergrrl, I hope your getting the correct oat groats. They said they are not steamed but are they toasted ? The ones I have seen from Bobs Red Mill say on the back of the bag in small print toasted.....I am very friendly with our local health food market and the only companies they have found and been able to get pre-packaged raw hulled oat groats from are Shiloh Farms, they are in PA. BUT, hopefully they have the correct ones !! Let us know when they here so I can tell my store friends to order them !

eek! well, fortunately, my order just came and i read the back of the package and here's what it says: "ingredients: whole grain oats".

i'm soaking them even as i write. let's see if they sprout!

although my oat groats from Bob's Red Mill may be raw, because they have hulls, they cannot be sprouted. i learned this through another post here after i ordered them, unfortunately.

so now i just ordered and received hulless oats specifically for sprouting from Sun Organics. You can order online and in the comments sections, write that you want priority mail, which is much cheaper than the other options. I only had to pay $4.05 in shipping fees this way.

there is also a $2.50 handling fee attached to each order.

i'm hoping these will be softer than the hulled variety.
