Hello raw foodies! With a longstanding interest in general nutrition, I've become extremely interested in alternative nutrition (veganism and raw/living foods) within the last 6 months or so. I was initially sparked by Matthew Kenney and Sarma Melngailis' beautiful book "Raw Food/real world," and also recently purchase Alissa's FABULOUS book and DVD. I'm totally into it, and on my way to transitioning (slowly). It feels so right. Green smoothies are my new love.

Anyone else in Vermont? I'm originally from Ithaca, NY and went to school in Chicago. Have been in VT since last summer, and am looking to move back to Chicago this summer (can't commit to locations!)

Glad to be here. I've been lurking for awhile but want to start joining in on conversations. You all are SO inspiring, you have no idea =)

onesmartcookie,

Hi! I visited Burlington Vermont a few years ago. It was beautiful. We went to Lake Champlain and also to Sherburne Farms.

Miranda--
So glad we've connected! Now we can lament the fact together that no place in Burlington will order young coconuts for us =(

Karenisraw--
Burlington, and Vermont in general, is quite a scenic and beautiful place. Actually most of the Northeast is =) Shelburne Farms is amazing, I've been to quite a few events there--really incredible to see the estates and such. I'm actually heading out right now to walk the bike trail along the lake...with a view of the Aidirondaks in the background.
Thanks for commenting!

Start your own buyer's co-op. Just get together and order a case and split it.

we'd have to buy online and shipping is crazy. and who's to say theyd be in good shape when they got here...we've both asked all around town for people to order them....
i know that at 2 places i asked, they had no idea what i was talking about and pointed me to the direction of the "wacky" coconuts...

the places i've found online are outrageous..and shipping on top of that....
would be worth it in my opinion.

we'll just have to take a roadtrip to WHOLE FOODS and buy a case or something. it'd be worth the 3-5 hour drive right :) still be cheaper than buying online i think.

I know, what's so "wacky" about those coconuts anyway? They make me laugh.

I'm going home to visit my parents in Ithaca in a few weeks and hoping to maybe see if I can find some around there. If so, I'll bring some back to share!

Where is the nearest whole foods anyway? Apparently some Wal-Marts will order them for you, but I don't think the Wal-Mart in Williston is a supercenter, and I think only the supercenters do that.

Though the Green Mountain State is certainly lovely, it is NOT raw food friendly. Yet. ;)

i think the closest Whole foods would be in Hadley MA...which is 3.5-4 hrs away i think!? if you don't have any luck in Ithaca i think a roadtrip is in order :) or i could check when i go home to NH and ask the WALMART SUPERCENTER if they can order some. i know that williston wont b/c its not a supercenter.

yea i love vermont..it's beautiful...but we don't have too many options for organic/raw food friendly establishments. we gotta change this :)

Ahhhh, you give up too easily...

Here's what I would do. First, check with any Thai restaurants or asian markets in the area to see if they use or sell young coconuts. If so, where do they get them? Or would they sell them to you? I currently get mine here in the N. Boston area at an Asian market for $1.79 ea., less than half what Whole Foods sells them for. And they're making a profit selling them to me at twice what they paid for them.

Also, check with any organic rstaurants in the area, ditto above.

Also check with organic produce distributors who serve your area.

Finally, if all else fails, spend some time on the internet searching for WHOLESALE prices on CASE LOTS. Not retail, which will make you go blind.

One last thing, some sources have GREEN coconuts... it's the same thing as white baby coconuts but with the outer shell still on them.

hey hey... welcome..

i love b-town. last summer i lived on a farm over in huntington (just 30 mins south of burlinton) and it was bliss! vt in the summer is simply incredible! i'm really surprised that you can't get coconuts around there... healthy living won't hook it up??? and what about heady markup (aka city market)??? oh, and its about time that someone opened a raw food restaurant in town...

and hey, i went to college in ithaca! i will be moving back there this summer to help with the developmengt of an eco-hostel! such a beautiful, progressive town... can't wait to move back there for a few months!

anyway, welcome to the board! :D

thanks for all the welcomes, I think this site will easily become an addiction =)

Shiv-Thanks for all your knowledgeable advice. Burlington isn't exactly a mecca of ethnic foods, but Miranda and I will do some brainstorming and plan our next steps, because young coconuts NEED to happen. I don't think we even have an asian market, do we Miranda?

Thanks for the welcome misslinda! Your posts are always so motivational and inspirational =)

Misty--Burlington in the summer = bliss. Unfortunately, it lasts about 3 months. But during those 3 months, it can't be beat. You know, I would have expected Healthy Living to be all about coconuts, but apparently not. City market only carries the dark mature ones. Miranda and I are ON IT!

Yeah, you know there aren't even any 100% vegan places to eat here either, I don't think. Stone soup and maybe Penny Cluse have vegan options, but nothing here is devoted to the lifesyle. How amazing would a raw foods restaurant and store in Burlington be? Did you go to Cornell or IC? Ithaca is another "gorges" place, but I busted out to Chicago upon high school graduation. I appreciate Ithaca much more now. I go home every couple months to visit the rents. Eco-hostel--can't wait to hear how that goes!

Miranda--yay! I think we could be excellent partners in raw food crime. It's funny, if I move back to Chicago, I'm looking to work at the only raw foods restaurant there--Karyn's Fresh Corner. I ate there about a month ago and it was really incredible. A friend of mine's mother studies with Karyn, and I'm hoping she can get me in the door. Maybe then I'll move back to Burlington and we'll bring raw food to the masses in the green mountain state!
Really looking forward to getting together =)
