I went walking with friends and we all stopped for drinks afterwards. My friends took me to a place that advertised fruit smoothies so I could have something. I was very touched.

I ordered a banana, pineapple, and mango smoothie. I knew it was not organic fruit, but, my friends were so thoughtful I said nothing about that. Well, I ask for just fruit and ice nothing else added. They said fine. Then as I was paying I notice she was blending and she had put no fruit in the blender. Upon inquiring she indicated averything was pre packaged from concentrate.

I was shocked. I did pay for the drink and just sat and looked at it cause I did not want my friends to feel bad.

So anyway, I threw it away when we all left.

I did not realize until now that not all smoothie makers are usually real fruit

Ugh.

good point about the concentrate...there is this smoothie bar at the university where i work at part-time...and i was thinking at least i can count on a smoothie ( i work part-time in the grill area of all places supervising and working with the student workers) and then i realized that most of that fruit was from concentrate after watching them prepare the smoothie.....

that's why i like mine the best then i can control what goes in them...can't wait to the summer, i usually drink one or two a day in the summer.....

Many store bought smoothies are really just milkshakes renamed... I have yet to find a smoothie/juice bar here in Australia that has an all fruit smoothie on the menu. Most are usually dairy or soy or icecream or sorbert. If you ask many places will do you one with juice fruit (especially ones that are juice bars and have fresh fruit!).

So scary isn't it!

... but sometimes, girl, you get what you need. (I'm not being sexist, gentlemen, those are the words to the song.)

At Jamba Juice and another franchise chain smoothie bar, I ask them to make a smoothie but with only freshly-squeezed orange juice, frozen mango and frozen banana with NO ice (since they just freeze tap water - ick!).

I have to watch them carefully so they don't use already-squeezed and refrigerated juice (I want it squeezed in front of me), so they don't add yogurt or some other pourable ugly stuff, so they don't add ice anyway (which is the norm, so they sometimes just do it without thinking).

Many places don't even use fruit concentrate. It is a chemical-laden, artificial mixture that they buy by the container. I don't believe it's every seen a piece of fresh fruit.

Caveat emptor -- as always!!

I noticed this even before I knew anything about being raw. The only thing I get from those so called smoothie places is Jamba juice has wheat grass. They make it right in front of you. It's funny cause the place is always packed so when I order it people sort of like gather around and after I drink it they start asking all kind of questions

Is that all you get?
what does it taste like?
Why do you get that and nothing else?
LOL!!!

Sometimes they have bananas and strawberries.
If I'm somewhere I just ask for ice, fresh bananas and strawberries. Nothing else.

Robeks is good place to get smoothies. they only use whole fruit and fresh squeezed juices that they make in the morning. i ask every time i go in, "is that orange juice fresh squeezed???" they reassure me that they fresh squeeze it every morning. and then you can get any kind of fresh fruit you want in it. or you can get freshly juiced carrot juice with ginger and apple juice. it's so yummy!!!

Yep, Robek's is fine, too.

I make them squeeze it right there in front of me, though. There's tons of nutrients lost within an hour after squeezing .... and, sadly, I can only believe it if I've seen it myself.

And, hey, for those prices, they can darn well squeeze it right then!! ;)

The funny thing is that a lot of times they advertise it as if it IS fresh and full of wonderful fruit. Ugggghhhh!

It's funny all of the drinks that are named a fruit "smoothie". Have you seen the commercial for the new McCain's "fruit smoothie"? The one with the tagline, "Ready, just in time"? Yuck! It looks vile. Even if I was not raw I'd still not go near it...it looks like pink milk, not all nice and thick.

Long time ago in 1998 I used to buy those smoothies in the mall thinking it was fresh fruit and healthy for me. Now I make my own fruit smoothies on a daily basis and they are delicious. So much so, my DH be expecting one when he comes downstairs and actually gets upset if I only left him a corner in the blender.

It would be great if there was a national chain that made smoothies from FRESH ORGANIC FRUIT products.

You know, it isn't a bad idea. I am on the East Coast but I would think there would be a demand for it here.

Start one!! I'd go there!

I've seen so-called "fruit smoothies" in various places through the years too that were nothing but packaged mixes and some fruit syrup thrown in to make them sweeter, ick!

I am lucky that there is one place locally I can get a real fruit smoothie and it happens to be this little independent Cafe in a local health club. I order exactly what I want in it and then watch them like a hawk to be sure what is put in, well now I don't have to watch so closely since I know what they are using!
