Hi all...I'm 25 & I have 2 small children - I was thin before I had them and then blew up with my pregnancies. However now I'm down to 130 but am shooting for 110 - and I CANNOT lose weight! I don't know what I'm doing wrong? I haven't lost any weight from going raw. I do have constipation "issues" so I know that could slow things down  But it seems rediculous that for all i'm doing - i'm not losing any weight or seeing any difference - what could it be? I'm so frustrated!!!

how long have you been doing this?

getting in an infrared sauna a couple of times a week has been helping me a lot. I'm going to start Bikram yoga-90 minutes of yoga in a heated room-lots of sweat and detox-I've heard that helps too.....

Hey Rawrunnergril,

What is it you are doing? What are you eating? what forms of exercise? Do you have any other health issues? Are you 100%?

Sometimes exercise makes you eat more calories; this can be true especially for runners or people performing heavy cardio OR those people overtraining -- this is not a bad thing, per se. Weight gain may depend on what you are reaching for, for this increase.

Now, this may sound contradictory, but one can gain by not getting enough calories. You must not deprive your body of carbs (fruit or grains) and fats. This is why adjustments are needed _at some point_ when trying to lose for most folks. don't undereat or your body will go into starvation mode and store calories.

It may also be as simple as your body adjusting to the new foods, the exercise or both. Sometimes it takes time. I remember hitting plateaus and it seemed nothing was working; then, it was as if in one day I was suddenly thinner :D The body has it's own time table and will do what it wants when it wants.

Keep exercising and eating good foods. Lots of greens are good too for satiety. Give it time; be patient. Choose raw foods, and you'll be doing well.

Best,

does it make a difference what kind of sauna you get into?

oh yeah, far infrared sauna's are the best. The infrared is the same light we get from the sun and it penetrates through the skin and actually has oxygenating effects on the blood and tissues and also healing effects on the body. Combine that with the sweating from the heat and it's energizing as well as healing. I feel AMAZING from these saunas.

I have to say I love saunas ! I just quit my job at one of gyms I was working at ( in hopes of needing more time to pursue a career in raw foods) and boy do I miss the sauna !

Again, what others have asked. What type of exercise are you doing ?

I have been "raw" since January - and I'm not 100%...I was for a bit, but then put some cooked foods back in - I don't even know why!

With my diet i end up eating fruit for breakfast & dinner. Then for lunch I try to eat some type of vegetable dish...but that's the meal I tend to cheat & eat cooked. I also juice carrots, cucumber & beet every day.

I'm running 5 days a week - at least 3 miles each time, and w/serious hills. Plus I do 1hr. Pilates 3x/week, and I walk 3x/week pushing my 2yr.old for over an hour - with lots of hills as well. I also recently added a video that has stuff like squats, lunges, arm work, abs, etc...but haven't been doing that too regularly - although I'd like to do that one atleast 3x/week - right now it's about 2x/week.

As far as the constipation thing goes - for 10+ years I was going only 1x every 2 weeks! Now with this diet I go about every 3-4 days..which is better, but I don't really feel much better. My stomach always hurts and is bloated like I'm 5 or 6 months pregnant - it's awful. Every time i eat, even if it's only an apple - it expands. I've had numerous tests, etc...everything is always "normal" No one knows why i have this problem. So I'm hoping raw will help! I have no where else to turn basically.

Hope this is helpful - thanks so much for allyour responses!!!

your suffering from what I suffered FOS-ism!!!!!!!!!!! ;)

Seriously Runnergirl, having been constipated 10 plus years is ure too slow down the mechanics of your body which includes the metabolism etc. your going to be fine and lose weight...........here we go, "let's get moving" *no pun intended :p

this is my own personal thinking not to dismiss what others will say.

I'm seeing a combination of complexities that contribute to your
stuck-ism.......

1. Exercising intensity is too much

2. Concentrated foods: Cooked & RAW

3. On top of it all, Juices no bulk(very potent)

How does water fit in all this? When you drink water alonem, do you get bloated or feel it gets stagnant?

Do you get tired after eating?

Left side of stomach hurts dull pain or sharp pain or pain when you press?

I would bet FLORA is shot

Are you willing to make changes in your diet ? ;)

rawrunnergirl

Oh my goodness - it's so interesting that you asked if the left side of my stomach hurts - and it ALWAYS does...the lower left side. SOme days it's awful, extreme pain. I recently went to my gyno cause I thought it was my ovaries, and he did an ultrasound and told me - nope - that's all fine - my bowels are just distended. YUCK.

Whenever I drink water I get bloated...and i definitly get tired - and lots of times headaches - after eating...and So to the other things - you're saying I shouldn't juice? or not as much? or I should change my exercise routine? sorry to ask for specifics - i'm just so new to this!

and I'd definitly make changes in my diet - but for years i've tried stuff and nothing works - so I'd just like to try something i KNOW will help the constipation specifically. Of course I want allover health, but I would LOVE to do something that's specifically healing the colon, you know? AH I just don't know what to do!!!

Rawrunnergirl, left side is colon

I would love to give raw suggestions but what cooked foods are you currently planning on keeping in your plan?

Curious, what was life like prior to being diagnosed with constipation? i.e. Anger issues,Car accident ,depression etc?

Well I actually don't plan on keeping any cooked foods - ideally. That's what I'm shooting for. Normally the only time I eat cooked is when I completely cheat. Like fried rice, sushi, teriyaki vegetables...etc...cake...
But I don't want to have any cooked! That's what I'm TRYING to do!!

Prior to constipation...I don't remember anything major? I remember this coming about when I was around 12 or 13...maybe even earlier, I just can't say for sure. But I remember one day mentioning that I went to the bathroom about every 2 weeks and my mom almost had a heart attack! ANd that's when I began all the dr. visits...I didn't even know going that little was wrong! So I think I've had the problem even longer then I can remember. But as far as any crisis, etc - I didn't have an accident, or any depression until later in life - and then it was completely hormonal. But here are 2 things that affected my growing up: One, I was on a strict diet until aruond 12 yrs old...no corn products (in everything!) and no dairy - so maybe they were wrong when they told me I "outgrew" those allergies! who knows? And also, I did not have a good relationship with my 2 older sisters - life was really difficult with them - I was constantly upset & had anxiety, etc...it was awful. I remember ALWAYS crying, having some sort of breakdown all the time - along w/ screaming matches, etc...but you get the point - that's the one big emotional thing in my life I can think of. Maybe that has something to do w/all that's going on w/me? Or how it started? I never thought about it before. Just so you know - I have a fabulous relationship w/my sisters now - but still have CONSTIPATION!!! :o

Have you tried the elimination diet to determine food sensitvity ? I have an issue of cramps and low gut ache that will last days if I eat certain foods.
I have had years of this and have determined what I am sensitive to and what I am not..

Something to consider...

Some foods I had to eliminate (these we pre raw)

Eggs, Soy, Kidney Beans, Wheat...now I am Raw I found I cannot eat Flaxseeds and sprouted soft wheat berries. I think it is the Gluten.

Flax Seeds

rawfigure, that's a good point.
I've become more sensitive to onions for some reason. Red onions, which have always been mild to me, seem harsh now; but not to the extent I'd have to eliminate them. I wonder if just clean eating causes the sensitivity to intensify.

On the other hand, I've read that some people can actually return to foods they were previously allergic or sensitive too once they get healthy and or clean up their digestive system through proper nutrition.

Are you otherwise getting your Omega 3's? It's rather important for people to get them and especially those following a vegan diet. If you cut out flax, that's a huge source. You could get it through hemp, but you'd have to get enough of it (not sure...2 TB maybe). Walnuts have it, but much, much lower; so you'd have to eat a lot of them. Flax is easiest since 1 TB ground is all that's required per day. Supposedly, flax oil isn't as highly recommended as seeds, but an option as well.
Also, sprouting increases absorption of nutrients and, as you know, makes indigestibles, digestible. I found Sprouted Flax Seeds (http://store.gorawcafe.com/grff-flxseed.html), which are really good tasting, especially if one doesn't like flax. They are crunchy and can be eaten out of the bag like a snack. Don't even need salt, which surprised me. Anyway, they may not bother your stomach. I read once that flax cannot be sprouted, but it's not true; I looked it up and it's a pia process, but can be done. I wouldn't do it, though; so it's best to buy them. Might be an option for you, anyway.

How's your diet coming along? Any new discoveries? :)

Hey ya'll Flax seeds don't contain Gluten.........some things can be Glut-in-nous in texture but as far as Glut-enous, it is not.

Many here who know me know that this is my standard answer..........YOU NEED A MASTER CLEANSE! I'd say at least 15 days (30 would be better). Also, seems like you have alot of stress, that will clog up your system also bigtime. You should eliminate daily. If you are not, its because your system is clogged up. You are bloating probably because of the toxins in your intestinal tract. I think a good MC will really help you. Of course that will take a real commitment from you. But I have found it well worth any sacrifice.

Peace.

I CANNOT lose weight!

First off, don't claim that.
That is a negative thought pattern. You have to think and know that you can lose weight.

Everyone had great advice, especially the one about the master cleanse.
Keep eating raw and exercising but also cleanse your colon!!! Do some enemas at home. People can carry 10-25lbs of decayed waste in their colon.

I gotta chime in here.

I'm 5'4, 122lbs. My shape is absolutely fine, but I still believe I have about 5-10 more lbs. to lose for my ideal weight. I'd like to be around 110-115. I have great muscle tone and am in good shape, but there is that layer of fat...

So, I did a 21 day cleanse which concluded in a 3 day fast (which I chose do drink the master cleanse drink for those 3 days). Along with daily enemas, I lost 5 lbs. and looked great. I think I looked clean! Anyway, the cleanse ended and I went straight back to raw food and now probably gained back those 5lbs. I honestly believe that a 10-14 day master cleanse would be great. My only problem is really disciplining myself to do it and successfully get through the difficult first few days.

I hope sharing this helps a little bit. And I wouldn't mind a bit of advice for my goals.

Thanks!

Oh, and rawrunnergirl...let me throw this out to you...would you want to buddy up with the master cleanse? I have two year old twins, so I certainly think being a Mom of young children would bond us through the cleanse.

It's a thought.

Rawrunnergirl, you mentioned you were on a strict diet until age 12 or so. Isn't that also the time you started having bowel issues? just wondering why the special diet went by the wayside and if maybe you have food intolerences that contribute to the colon issues???? I too have colon issues that have flared up recently even though I am high raw???? I am a runner too and have noticed a weight increase by about 5 lbs.... as well as a feeling of bloatedness and increased abdominal girth??? I've tried MC but just cannot stick to it....I think my activity level is too high and my life too busy to do it apprpriately...I just turned 39, have 5 children and am a teacher so my days are long and BUSY!!! Wish I had better advice for you but at least I can empathize!!! Keep us posted...Have you ever tried epsom salts for a colon cleanse? tastes nasty but loosens EVERYTHING up rather quickly!!! and makes for a great bath too! (and cheap to top it all off!) Good luck! :)

I suggest a cleanse such as 7-day miracle cleanse-www.7dmc.com-has parasite remover, also or the dual action cleanse-www.dualactioncleanse.com-these cleanse are much deeper than the master cleanse AND you can do them and hold a job.

I apologize for asking a seemingly silly question, but as I am so new to this....what is, or does a Master Cleanse entail? Should beginners try this?

going 100% raw vs. 99% can make a world of difference to some individuals, especially in the topic of loseing weight. Also, you're body is most likely detoxing and would rather get you cleaner internally and THEN work on the excess fat. Don't look at the number, especially if you're exercising that much. Your body composition may change.

Rawrunnergirl -

You said that the doctors did tests - did they do a Cat Scan, or a Colonoscopy? I have diverticultis - constipation can cause this, and it can be very serious. The diverticulitis is part of the reason I am going raw.

I just wanted to mention this, to make sure your doctors have ruled this out. I, for one, would want to be VERY careful about considering doing any colonics, since I have diverticulitis. It's not to say that it couldn' t be helpful (with someone who is very skilled), but I wouldn't want to take a chance that I injure my colon, because it would mean (another) trip to the ER, and a possible emergency operation.
