Today I was craving refried beans and I just didn't want to take the time to do the whole recipe and dirty up the cuisinart, so I made this quick version and gosh, they were GREAT!
1 cup sunflower seeds
1 teaspoon ground cuminseed
1 teaspoon ground chili powder
2 tablespoons olive oil
First, I put the sunflower seeds in the coffee grinder and ground them fine.
Then I put them in a bowl.
I added the spice and the oil
Then, little by little, I added lukewarm water until they were the "right" consistency.
I put them on a cracker.
Add a piece of avocado
Spoon on some salsa (just tomatoes, garlic, and onion)
YUM!
Took about 5 minutes for a very satisfying lunch!

This sounds so tasty!
I am going to try it for dinner tonight. Thanks for sharing.
BTW, how many "servings" would this be?

Hmmm.. I guess that depends on how much you use.
I ate 2 crackers with maybe a tablespoon on each and there's a lot left.
I'd say maybe 8 servings of 1 teaspoon each?
It goes a long way because it's very filling.
I forgot to say I added a little celtic sea salt too.
Gosh -- what a yummy day on the board today -- have just tried Vandy's nut dressing recipe and now here's this, which sounds irrestible. Thanks, RowanC -- I'm off to try it right now!

Silly question for you Rowan -----
What kind of coffee grinder do you have that you can put oil in it? I would never be able to clean mine if I did that.
Thanks!

I had to go back and read my post to be sure I didn't tell anyone to put oil in their coffee grinder!
You grind the SEEDS then PUT THEM IN A BOWL.
Then to the seeds in the BOWL, you add the other ingredients?
You do not put any oil in the coffee blender.
You mix the stuff up with a spoon or a fork, adding water a little at a time to get the right consistency.
Sorry if I wasn't clear. :D
I also discovered later today when I went to make another one, that since you don't soak the seeds, this can get thick. Just add a little more water and stir and it comes right back to a good consistency.
Good luck :)

I have the small coffe grinder from Starbucks and LOVE IT!!! My husband is a manager for a Starbucks in our area and bought one just for my raw food prep! (What a sweetie!) He even decorated it with a sharpie to say "RAW FOOD ONLY!")

Aromaticwings, I think the "refried beans" were really good, and resembled the flavor of beans, but not 100%. I didn't make the recipe thinking it would taste just like traditional beans, but I added salt, cumin, chili powder, and onion powder to the mix and the flavors blended nicely! You could give it a try and see what YOU think before you offer it to friends!
