Hello lovely rawies,

I am starting this thread because I wanted to see if anyone might be interested in starting a daily exercise thread. I feel like I have raw under control, yet can't seem to get it together to do rigorous exercise everyday. I know it's what my body wants to do, but I somehow am always letting excuses get in the way, like.. I don't belong to a gym, it's cold, it's raining, blah blah blah. I want to be sweating and to feel that glorious feeling of achy muscles in the morning after being WORKED the day before.

So i'm thinking I would like to make the committment to use my body for 30 minutes everyday, whether it be walking, rebounding, pilates, yoga, dancing... ideally an hour though, so I can include both a cardio and strength component.

We can do our fitness and come back to this thread and share our workouts and struggles. I think accountability is a huge motivator. I know it's what made me take the leap into 100% raw, I was part of a little online support group.

Anyone interested?

Love,
Sunshine

Greetings fellow Sunshine :)
I'm glad you're in. any specific plans or goals?

My main goal is to tone up, look super hot and healthy in my summer bikini, and to work up an "internal fire" to balance out the cool raw food so I will feel more balanced in general. I'm sure i'll think of others.

Tonight to begin my personal exercise challenge I put on some music and I practiced belly dance for about 30 minutes. It felt good, and I broke a light sweat. I plan on doing more rigorous workouts as the days continue, and ya gotta start somewhere ;)

Love to all.

anyone else in?

Oh boy, do I need something like this, but afraid to commit cause I know me. . . Fat and Lazy!

So, here goes -- rebounding every day, starting at 15 minutes, working up one minute daily. And every other day, doing my balance ball crunch excercise tape. Oh, and run to the mail box every day -- it is all up hill.

I know that doesn't sound like much, but I gotta start small.

Thanks for committing me! I too wanna look decent when warm weather comes -- in a pair of shorts. . . I'll leave the bikinis to you younger ones.

Count me in ;).... I did a little belly-dancing tonight myself (gotta love the jangle of the hip scarf)

It was running and yoga for me today...

running as always everyday....

I just can't seem to run enough; it is such a release! You know running outside clears your mind soo much and makes the time fly, but seeing that it is kinda cold where you are, you might have to wait till things warm up a bit.

OK...I'm in! I needed this! Just in time! Glad you started this! I have a gym membership that is going to waste. We have swimming class today, I will be in the pool, back and forth, treading water and swimming for 1 hour. That will have to it for me today. Tomorrow I'm committing to you all that I will hit the gym BEFORE I take my kids to the grocery store! 45 minutes of cardio, and chest and arms, and of course ABS!

Wow! Welcome everyone. I am so excited we have all these active exercisers committed to improving fitness and health. Yay!

This morning I felt pumped to get up and to have awesome news to report on this thread. Jumped on the rebounder for about 30 minutes, warmed up with some yoga sun salutations, then did about 15 minutes of pilates ab work and a few push ups.

Right now i'm off to take a 20 minute (or however long it takes me) walk to run some errands.

Keep up the good work everyone!

Sounds good to me,

Right now, I am currently doing strength training on M-W-F. Today I am going to the gym and I am going to do:

Leg Press
Seated Row
Leg Curl
Chest Press
Calf Raise
Lat Pulldown
Push-up (these are a challenge for me, I don't think I do them correctly)
Biceps Curl
Tricep Extension
Abdominal Crunches

This usually takes somewhere around 45 min to 1 hour, then I will do about an hour of cardio; right now, I am in this phase where I want to mix things up and so I'll do 20 minutes on the treadmill, 20 minutes on the bike, 30 minutes on the elliptical machine and then I will top it off with 10 minutes on the stair machine...my goal will be to get up to 20 minutes on the stair machine eventually...this last one is my biggest challenge because it is just like walking up a flight of stairs that never ends. But it's a good challenge. Great idea to do this post.

Yes! Sounds like a great idea, just what I need to get this exercise thing going.

I commited to exercise today, I did about 20 minutes of working out with my exercise ball. Man that stuff is potent, I'm already a touch sore.

I've got clogging class tomorrow which is pure FUN! I cannot wait.

i am headed to the gym in the morning for back/abs/legs and 20 minutes of intervals on the elliptical machine ;)

Alright here's what I did again today...just like I do everyday...RUN!!

Except for today I had to run indoors b/c it was waaaay to cold outside so I did:

Eliptical 15 min
Treadmill running 30 min
Walking treadmill 5-10 min (reading)
situps on a yoga bounce ball for about 5 min :)

Feeling good... I can't go a day without working out... if I don't do cardio, I do yoga intensively.

You know they say that after 30 days it becomes a habit, if everyone exercises everyday for 30 days, then it will become a habit and easier and easier and then you won't have to force yourself to do it anymore. This was the case with me. I now LLOOOVEE working out and it is such a release for me... whewwww

i think that for tonight (since its late in the evening) i am going to do some cardio at home...thinking about billy blanks boot camp dvd or maybe just creating my own drill of jumping jacks/walking up the stairs/power lunges/calf raises for about 30 -40 minutes ...I was going to flip a coin, but I think I've decided...I will not do boot camp with billy tonight, energy is a little low (doing MC)

happy exercising everyone :)

this morning i jogged a hilly trail (about 4.5 miles) nonstop in 48 minutes.. twas my first time completing it since i started up exercising again a couple weeks ago.. i was proud of myself :DWow!!! Nonstop?! I am so impressed. Where did you go, by the way. When I am in that kind of shape, maybe I'll head down there! The other weekend I went for a wild edibles hike up in Crystal Cove -- gotta get back into cardio for sure! Or pick up the pace of my walks.

So -- I'm in, but stating what I'm going to do at the beginning of the day just doesn't work for me at the moment. Too many variables. Like a trip to San Francisco over the next 6 days.

So, if it's okay with y'all, I'd like to do a "reporting in" post where I tell what I've done each day. I'm thinking I could use the accountability right now. Very soon will be warmer weather and less clothing which should be accompanied by less jiggling, in my belief system!!

Sunshine9
03-24-2006, 09:34 PM
Lavendar- how long are you MCing for? I'm amazed you have the energy to exercise at all! Take it easy when you need to :)

Raw Truth- Sounds good! we look forward to the reports. I think we're all looking for a little less jiggle..

Miss Linda, Path, everyone else-- keep up the good work!

This morning I got up exactly 30 minutes earlier than I needed to so I could workout, and ended up having a huge discussion/fight with my father, and missed it. I was very upset, however I had lots of energy after work, I just couldn't decide what I wanted to do. I ended up putting on some music and doing stretching and strength moves for about 15 minutes, then belly dance for 20. what a workout!

same thing i pretty much do everyday... run run run!!! well, today it was more on the jog side, but it's just b/c I was reading sociology on the treadmill at the same time... it's hard to bounce and read at the same time. All of the words seem to juggle around or get blurry...nevertheless, I got the article done. Ironically, it was entitled "The Overworked American" ... I am sure everyone can guess what this was about. I felt energized after I worked out though! Woo hoo!!

Okay, I did stairs -- not like I used to, two at a time up and down for 1/2 hr -- bu more slowly and carefully (knee injury still being healed by my body on its own time!) since I didn't get in my hour-long walk.

I'm feeling just so-so about it, but deciding to focus on the better than nothing aspect.

Oh, that's right -- this thread is to hold ourselves accountable and to share, not to get down on ourselves for what we're not doing. Whew!! Glad I snapped out of it!

Happy Saturday everyone!

This was really a good idea - the daily exercise thread. It really does help me to keep a mental check and hold myself accountable.

Sunshine...
I am not sure exactly how long I am going to do this. At least as long as the last time. I gave myself Saturday and Sunday off because I figured I would get enough exercise walking around dining services here at the university. I work from 9 a.m. to 8p.m. and we do not sit down (except for lunch)..I figured the constant movement would be enough exercise for me today..

Take care everyone

Same thing I do everyday pinky...try to take over the worllld!!!!

Just kidding...

I ran while reading art history on the treadmill (but this time I didn't mind the bouncing since I didn't particularly like the article)... but I did a tonnnn of sit ups on a yoga ball and had plenty fun stretching with it!!! Everyone should get one! they cost about 20$ and I have replaced the chair in my dorm with one!! They help with balance AND toning you stomach, and when you need a break around the house from doing whatever, ba-BOOM, it's there for you to not only play with, but also work out with!! So many benefits!

I maintained a hunched posture during my flight from Los Angeles to San Francisco while wedged into a window seat next to a squirming 5 year old and her mom who was holding a squealing toddler on her lap. I'm sure that toned a few muscles. So -there was my isometrics.

Before that, I race-walked through my house innumerable times packing, cleaning, preparing for dog-sitter, tossing veggies/fruit that will die while I'm gone, emptying trash and recycling, etc. -- from laundry room to bedroom to living room to backyard to driveway to office to living room ... and every conceivable route between them. That was my cardio.

Finally, while eating delightful raw food at the new Cafe Gratitude in Berkeley, I laughed with my companions and was elevated by their good company, the waitstaff's sincerity and devotion, and the gracious and gratitude-inducing surroundings. There was my meditation.

Tomorrow is supposed to begin with a 6 a.m. walk. Wahoo!!

Today I did a 90 minute belly dance class, which started with heavy stretching and strength moves... all i can say about that is my glutes were singin' by the end, (which will be great for bikini season haha). Also worked up a good sweat. Had fun :)

RT- lol, i love your style. What did you get at Cafe Gratitude? I'm so excited to go there when i'm out in cali.
Karen- It's spring now!!! Though certainly not nice and warm here... it snowed today. anything you can do for your body indoors? I'm sure there is... Either way, we're here.
Linda-4 hills & 3 miles- wow! nice!
Vandy- I love that you do your homework on the treadmill. That always made me kind of dizzy. I look forward to joining a gym again so I can use the machines.. i love that stuff

push ups (what a joke, these are a challenge but eventually i'll get there)
biceps & triceps (will use free weights)
squat/lunges with weights

well i've been away from the thread for a while.. busy exercising i guess lol.

I ran the same trail again this morning with my dog and got it down to 45 minutes nonstop.. yehaw! Reporting in: I did a one-hour brisk walk (pushing the same toddler weight) and would have kept on going but it began raining and heavy wind. My poor spoiled Southern California self couldn't take it despite the excellent parka and gloves. Ah well -- 2 more days of Bay Area chill and I'm heading back south.

Sunshine9 - At Cafe Gratitude, we shared pizza, bruscheta, and magical mushrooms (yeah, I wish!). Then, the toddler didn't finish her ice cream with chocolate sauce so I had to slurp part of that up in addition to my chocolate pie with cashew cream. The new Berkeley CG is even better than the original - brick walls, lots of space, terrific waitstaff, and such a delightful clientele. It proves wrong those that think raw is just a teensy group of weirdos (well, some of us may qualify, but still ... ).

Tomorrow it will probably still be rainy, so I may have to do some wild dancing. That should greatly amuse the 2.5 yr. old! Ah! I just remembered seeing an exercise ball in a corner of the living room. That could definitely be amusing to her if I were to try some sit-up, push-ups and just about anything while using that. How DO people master those anyway?

O.K. I'm game.

I walked the mountain trail today from my home to the seashore. This trail I made myself, because I love the outdoors and love the freash ocean air. towards hom, I had to force myself to walk back up, which was indeed a whole nother kettle of fish, so to speak. That was a steep walk, LOL.

So.... got my exercise for today. Tomorrow it's back to making the trail an even better place to trot.

I read a friends book about this before and tried it a little with him.. The book is called [Core Performance] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/157954908X/sr=8-1/qid=1143578252/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-9904712-7217652?%5Fencoding=UTF8) and I could tell from the little bit I did that if I worked it hard it would render great results, but there isn't a good place at my new gym to do that kind of stuff. If I broke down and got a ball I might do it at home a bit but it does seem like it's something that needs to be done at least a few times a week..

Good job Crystl-jade!

Wow everyone is doing so great. This is what I like to see!!

I didn't exercise yesterday.

Today I REALLY exercised. It was my first day at the gym my family just joined... I did 10 minutes on the treadmill increasing the incline every minute, then 10 on the elliptical, 10 on the bike, and 10 more on the treadmill increasing the incline and jogging on and off... finishing with five minute cool down and then some stretching. It felt soooo good to really be sweating, have my heart beating.

It was interesting, because I haven't worked out in a gym for a couple of years, so I've never done it raw. Before I would have been huffing and puffing after 20 minutes with cramps in my side and discomfort (though I was very slender and "healthy" then). Now I noticed that there was no discomfort, no pain, I could feel my muscles tingling and I felt my body working, but it was ok, I felt like my body was inviting me to push it further and when it had had enough I just knew it was time to stop. AMAZING!!

hope everyone is having a marvelous day :)

Hi! This is a great idea! Just reading everyone's post gets me motivated!!
Today I did :

30 min. on elliptical
then worked on the machines:
leg press
leg curl
leg extension
chest press
shoulder press
lat pull
then 5 min. on stair machine

I just got some dvds to do at home....The Firm and Turbo Jam. Does anyone have these at all? I thought it would be good to do if I had only a late night workout opportunity.

I have a fitness ball also....it's great fun. I reccomend it! There are so many things you can do on it...and for like $15-20 it's a bargain!

Thanks for the inspiration everyone!

TP wow, 20 minutes on the stairmaster...that thing is no joke....I feel good when I can do 10 minutes..I think doing 20 minutes on that is like doing 40 minutes of cardio, its just like walking up stairs that never end...so far I can only get up to level 8 and not for long either before I have to go back down to 5/6

Curleedst I like your routine...I am not doing any running yet but when I do cardio, I usually do intervals between 3 and 4 machines and I do the same thing meaning I start out at a certain speed and then by minute 2 I increase my speed every two minutes until I get to the last minute.

I was going to go to the gym but I think it will just be me and Billy tonight. I am going to do Billy's Boot Camp workout which is about 55 minutes and that's it for me and cardio, I will throw in some ab work at the end. My energy is just so low during this MC

Yeah, it's going to be harder to step onto that stairmaster a second time! lol

This morning I was back at the gym and got a good back/abs/legs workout and then 20 minutes of intervals on the elliptical.

I do 20 minutes of intervals from what I learned when I (unsuccessfully) tried Bill Phillips' Body for Life program years ago..

Its:

2 Minutes level 5 intensity to warm up (5 being half of your fullest effort, 10 being 100% effort)
1 Minute at level 6
1 Minute at level 7
1 Minute at level 8
1 Minute at level 9
Repeat the above cycle 3 times
The fourth time through the cycle is the 18th minute and that is
1 Minute at level 10 (That's Bill's whole thing about doing a new personal best effort each time)
Minute 19 to 20 is a level 5 or 6 cooldown..

Works great for me and for some reason this pattern seems to make the time go faster :)

Oooh i like reading everyones different routines! It all looks good.

Yesterday (Saturday) I did an hour and a half belly dancing classing, which focused on stretching/strength for the first 30 minutes. It was really great.

Today, did a good 37 min of cardio at the gym. 15 minutes on the treadmill running and walking. 10 minutes on the upright bike. Then 7 min on the elliptical.I was sweating a lot, which is essential! Then i came home, streched/yoga, and did some ab/glute work. I was dancing for a bit after that and worked my body some more. Was a pleasant and active day :)

Happy Monday Everyone!

Finally- I have a chance to check in. I don't think I got a chance to post on last Friday, I did the same weight training routine that I've been posting and I don't usually do anything on Saturday and Sunday because of the weekend job and standing and moving around for 11 hours straight on those days.

Today, I will be exercising late because I have a meeting this afternoon. I was really proud of something I did, Today is day 13 for the master cleanse I think and I feel stronger mentally and know that the physical tiredness is only temporary. What I am proud of is that I was able to survive the tempation, yesterday at work I was purchasing some water and some honey buns caught my eye. It gave me a flash back and I thought about how I could take 2 or 3 of those out in the old days...But that was it, I thought about the past and how it helped contribute to the weight gain and walked away. I have also had two dreams since cleansing for spring; in the first dream I am eating candy, and I think in the second dream I ate some type of wrap, I think it was a quesadilla or something mexican. It seems so real and each time I woke up and felt disappointed and then once I realized that it was just a dream I felt contented and relieved. I know that these dreams are just signs that are letting me know that I need to be very focused. Usually around the second week, that's when all the cravings come out of the closet for me.....anyway, sorry to going on and on....

Tonight I am going to do the usual weight loss routine which will be interesting, its always more challenging during the evening when I am fasting. According to my scale I am now at 203. I was thinking about this today and it probably doesn't sound like a big deal but I am eagerly anticipating being under 200...it's been a long time coming. My season is here now. In January of this year I was at 242 and now I am at 203. I feel renewed and empowered. I'm glad I found this site.

Today I was a little tired, but I went and did 35 minutes of cardio.

11 minutes walking on an incline on the treadmill. 12 minutes walking/running sometimes with the incline, sometimes flat. Then 10 minutes on the elliptical and cool down.

Some stretching.

Felt good :)

Today I excersised outside for an hour rather than the gym...I ran for 35 minutes and walked briskly the rest of the time.

I try to get to the gym 3-4 days a week, with 1 hour cardio each time followed by 30 minutes of weights roughly.

Yoga is too expensive to continue right now as I'm trying to paint full-time and have quit my job. I try to stretch a bit every day.

Its Wednesday. I did a 3 mile run today. I also did 3 sets of 10 wide grip chins (back day was yesterday), I just wanted to loosen up my shoulder for tomorrow as well as work on my wide-grip technique. I made a change in my routine this week in that I decided to do abs on Mondays and Fridays ( I was doing them with legs on Sundays). I thought I wasn't getting enough intensity with them. As it turned out it was a good move, I did 3 sets of 90 reps of various crunches on Monday, my abs are still sore today!(sign of a great workout). I also did a few twisting crunches today very slowly, just to practice my technique there. Always learning:)

Peace.

looks like some have been pressing on and living to post about it! ;) I have taken a little slide with the weather here and the time change. Can't do my usual trail run because it's a mud slide out there. Having a hard time getting up early enough to hit the gym since the time change. I am going to break down tonight and set the alarm so I dont miss another one! Tomorrow morning = I always start my gym workout with a 6 set gravitron cycle to warm up, then it's back time (two machines/3 sets each), abs (usually about 60 crunches on one of the machines), legs (3 machines, 3 sets each), cardio (20 mins of intervals, maybe 30 mins tomorrow because I need it)

Hello Everyone!

I didn't get a chance to post yesterday (thursday); I didn't do any strenous cardio as my energy is low due to the MC. Instead, I just walked my sister's hyper puppy for about 40 minutes.

For Friday -

Today, I met with a trainer because we get 2 free sessions and did a workout with him to test my strength for cardio, I walked the hyper puppy, Angel, this morning for about 20 minutes and then again this afternoon for about a hour. My energy is low but I feel really good mentally.

I like this thread, great idea.

Today I walked for an hour and then played tennis for another hour. Talk about sweaty...in South Florida! But I love it!

My goal is to resume weight training this week. 3-5 times a week, for about 45 minutes. After starting to play tennis again, my knees are telling me I'd better do this LOL

I love outdoor cardio--walking, jogging, biking, tennis, swimming, etc, and the weight training takes a little more,no a LOT more commitment on my part. So, you heard it here:

I'll be doing a leg work out at the gym tomorrow. :)

Just checking in to say hello to everyone. This week has been a drainer just because my energy is so low due to the MC. Sorry, didnt get a chance to post all week. Actually this week, I did something different. I did all of my cardio outside this week because the weather was sooooo nice (I think it is about 89 right now). I only did weights once this week rather than my usual M-W-F routine. My energy is just too low this week and I didn't want to risk an injury and so I have to listen to my body. Today is day 24 of the MC. I feel so much better as far as my focus goes. I'll be glad to get my energy levels back up to par.

I know its probably not a big deal to most people but I am really happy that I can now say that I am under 200 pounds. In January, I was 242 and right now, April 14th, I am 195. I am really grateful for this and know that this is the my season .... 195 is a lot still, but its going away.

I was all excited and reading through it....and it ended 3/23...I KNOW you're all still going strong so here's your chance to brag about a job well done....especially after the temptations of EASTER CANDY  some of us were faced with this week end! I myself am getting ready to go for a run outside in the glorious morning sunshine (when the sun is up a little more!) We're on spring break this week so I plan to run outdoors each morning....quite an accomplishment after my extensive layoff from running due to a broken femoral neck in January! I'm back on the road now, going strong and appreciating every workout I can do! C'mon everybody...Take in a deep cleansing breath and do something for at least 30 minutes! In the meantime, I've been doing my longer, 6+ mile walks daily and weight trained 3 times last week, just as I intended. I'll get 3 sessions in this week too, and probably some biking as well as the walks. All of my cardio is done outdoor in beautiful South Florida and really sets my tone for the day...makes me soo happy to be outside and active!

Thanks tglasco4! That's really inspiring. My hope is to finish out 40 days which would mean the end of this month. My energy is really low, I might have to alter the MC in some way but I just haven't decided how to yet. At any rate, I am off to the gym today to do some strength training for the major muscle groups and then I will try to do 20 minutes of cardio inside (probably a combo of treadmill and elliptical machine) and another 40 minutes or so tonight when I have to walk the puppy.

Thanks Sparkleplenty for the compliment! This is my second MC. I probably will not do this in the future unless I am certain that I have the time to give my body the rest it needs during this time-- too busy ripping and running and it is draining.

Anyway, before the cleanses, I started prepping my body for change 'cause I was tired of going up and down and up and down. 242 was my highest weight. I just got tired of being fat and making excuses about it. I used to make light of it because I didn't think I looked 242 and would compare myself to my friends whose frames were a lot different than mine yet, they weighed a lot less in comparison. I just couldn't get that. So now, I am holding myself accountable for my physical health and not worrying about comparing myself to others.

Even though I wasn't raw in January, I cut out certain foods. Specifically, I cut out all candy, white sugar and all flours, any processed foods, and cut out meats - well, sometimes I would make myself eat a broiled tilapia fillet because everyone (family) kept harping on the fact that I need protein. I haven't eating pork or beef for over 10 years. I was starting to lose an interest in chicken and had to be in the mood for that broiled fish. I had burned myself out on soy products (milk, burgers, etc.) and was just tired of eating stuff I didn't really want to eat and that's when I started thinking about just eating fresh fruits and veggies. I haven't found a fruit I don't like and I love a great variety of veggies. My eating habits also changed because within the last 3 years or so, I have really focused on having healthy combinations of food.

Please forgive my long-windedness. To make a long story short, I accidently found this site and here I am today. This site has been a great place of support. No one else in my family wants to hear about raw living or cutting anything out. With that said, I am off to start the day and burn some calories.

Have a Marvelous Monday Everyone!

Happy Thursday Everyone!

Sorry I haven't been able to do a daily posting. Feels like I've been running all week and I am still not caught up with all of the "to do's" on my list for this week. This was my schedule for this week:

Monday
Weight training-
quads/chest/biceps/triceps/back/thighs
Ab work
45 minutes of cardio (brisk walking outside at the part)

Tuesday
45 minutes of cardio outisde (brisk walking w/lunges at park)

Wednesday
The same weight training routine at on Monday except with some added lunges and chest work
Cardio-
An hour that consisted of 20 minutes of speed cycling in intervals, 15 minutes of elliptical machine with speed increases in intervals of every two minutes and the rest was on the treadmill with a walk two minutes, jog two minutes interval

Now that I am caught up, today I will do about 40 minutes of pilates work at home and then I will go to the gym this afternoon and do some intervals of cardio (probably what I did yesterday)

Sparkle that's pretty awesome, jogging for an hour. Great strength and endurance. :)

Just checking in. Today I decided to do strictly cardio. I usually do a 3 times a week weight training system but I am making alterations. I just did 60 minutes of cardio in the gym which consisted of 20 minutes on the bike, 10 minutes on the elliptical and 10 minites on the stair climber, and another 20 on the treadmill. I am slowly building my strength. I am not jogging a straight 20 minutes or anything like that yet, but I am doing it in 2 minutes intervals (2 minutes brisk walking/w minutes jogging).

I walked in a 10 K yesterday for Multiple Sclerosis. Today I feel like mush!
After about 3 miles, I felt like quitting, but, I kept on. Came in 4 from last (out of about a thousand or so) but hey, I finished it!

This is a major victory for me, because I have MS.

5 months ago, I got a wheelchair. I could barely walk, needed a cane and a sturdy arm to hang onto. I started eating raw in December, and walking just a few minutes more each day. Today, the canes are in the closet and the wheelchair is in the garage. And my MS is in remission, and I walked a 10K! Yahoo!

Wonderful Wednesday Everyone!

Wow! Everyone is moving and grooving. Yeaaaah! I didn't get a chance to post on Monday but I did 2 hours of cardio. I did 60 minutes of a exercise video and then did the rest of the cardio outside (speed walking).

Yesterday, I did my usual weight training schedule (the difference is now that I have switched over to Tuesdays and Thursdays because I think it will be easier on my schedule when I go to California next week). I did a brisk walk yesterday evening for cardio and did some ab work at home.

Guess what happened! I went to the gym yesterday and there was sign on the door stating that "as of 4/24/06 the gym was officially closed. WHAT????! Right now, it looks as if I am stuck with my old gym...which is really a great gym (at the university). I had stopped going because it was too crowded. I was really surprised and disappointed about the forumn fitness closing down. I don't know what we can do about a refund. I am going to call the BBB and see what happens. That was a great gym - so I thought, they had the best exercise equipment, the lay out was great, I really loved having the flat screen tv's on all the cardio equipment. I don't know....I guess they went under.... this is puzzling but my work out quest continues on

I'll be working out outside today (probably brisk walking) and then I might do some work inside the gym today; I am going to see what exercise classes are offered on today - might do kickboxing class for an hour if it is available.

Take care everyone!

I am going to workout my lower body today and do some ab work. Maybe a few minutes of cardio. I haven't been able to workout a lot because this is finals week. After this week, I plan to go to the gym everyday. I can't wait for this week to be over, and I don't have to read about systems engineering ever again!

Today I'll do 60 mins of total cardio...35mins running...rest walking at 4.6 miles/hour.

Then 1/2 hour weights...i find weights suffer as I prefer cardio.

How many times a week do you guys do cardio and for how long on average?

I had great momentum in my "old" routine: running T-Fri. + a long Sunday run and Monday walk + Pilates 3xweek and swimming 3xweek......until SOMETHING went "kaplewy" yesterday my back started aching so bad I went to bed by 6 pm and could not even go to work today....I did walk on my TM today to "loosen up" + an epsom salt soak but I am still achy....I am wondering if I have something else going on too though because I have been having bowel issues again and my intestines seem inflammed....look bloated in the belly but don't really "feel" bloated....Any ideas? Is it possible to have a detox setback after 8 1/2 months raw???? I have been doing psylliumand bentonite "shakes" daily lately because I heard they were cleansing for people like me with IBS issues but I am wondering if they actually aggravated the condition instead....My weight has crept up too (about 5 pounds) and for no reason??? I really would like some feedback on all of this because I've not had any of these "issues" in months....The only thing I can think of is the "shakes" are actually making me develop bowel pockets/obstructions rather than cleaning me out....so I am discontinuing the shakes and trying to drink LOTS of water today to get things moving again...PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

walked briskly 2 miles (I walk at about 4.6miles/hour)...is this good do you think from a cardio standpoint?
Weights: Biceps/triceps

Do you think walking at 4.6 miles an hour for an hour would be a good compliment to running three days a week an elliptical once a week? My knees get cranky if I run too much so I thought that a good sustained brisk walk pace would be a good cross training idea. Thoughts?

Thanks!

Hey, I'm reinforced with metal now so I'm kind of like the bionic woman!!! I am NOT going for speed at all!!!!! just going!!!! I have been running 5-6 miles a day for awhile now so this is a test to see if "I'm back" ok my old mile times were 8 minute miles and now it's more like 11 minute miles but I can stop and smell the roses better this way right???? Anyway, wish me luck....I'll post later! BTW.....Raw food and homeopothay cured me sooner than the doctors expected and everyone is AMAZED at my progress! This a.m. I made juice with a lime, 2 apples, 2 carrots, a cucumber, and some ginger....YUMMY!!! I also ate a banana a bit before I left.....I felt great the entire run...energetic!!!! BTW I save the pulp (except cores/lime) and add flax and homogonized dates, add H2O and dehydrate it in a "pizza" to have with my smoothie tomorrow a.m. for breakfast....just my frugal tip for the day!!! Sometimes I'll fill in the "pie" the night before with mashed banana/other homogonizes fruit...it's delicious!!! Hey lovely rawies, I haven't been posting here so much. I fell a little back (just a little) on exercise, but I have been keeping up!!

Today I went to the gym and did cardio (lately that consists of about 28 minutes on the treadmill, and 5 on the stairmaster). Also about 10 or 15 minutes spent using the weight machines to work my arms/shoulders/back. Haven't done formal lifting in a while and it felt good! Also stretching and ab work.

I'll admit.. the stairmaster is SUCH a challenge for me. That is why I incorporate it every workout (also to keep my butt perky ;), but it's hard and I don't like it, so i keep doing it to build strength so 5 minutes isn't so darn uncomfortable.

Hello Everyone!

I am in California (Bev. Hills since Wednesday) for the next 3 weeks and I am missing not being able to work out the way I would prefer. I did my regular workout routine on Monday and Tuesdays (Monday meaning cardio intervals for about 1 1/2 hours and then the same but also weight training on Tuesday)

Since I've been here, I've only been able to do brisk walking. I am visiting my best friend and trying to convince him to go to his gym so that I can attend as a guest. He is not interested and so I think I am going to go to a store somewhere here in Cali and purchase some free weights. I have a couple of workout DVD's as a backup plan to doing nothing at all. I really enjoy the gym however.

Keep up the good work everyone. Reading your posts inspires me.

can i join in on this thread?

I started exercising two days ago.

My boyfriend who is super athletic goes running almost daily. Now we are doing the first mile together, then he drops me off at home and keeps going for three more.

I went on Wednesday and Thursday (yesterday). I'm still achy but i feel really good! It's like my body wanted that exercise.

My goal is to run one complete mile without stopping within a month. Then we'll add another mile and then another and then another until I can join him on his whole 4 mile run.

I ran about a 1/4 a mile the last two days and walked the rest. Today we're going to try to run 1/2 a mile and walk the rest.

I add a shorter run last two days, 4 miles each bringing me 20 miles so far this week. Plan to do Weights tomorrow, as only done a few circuits so far this week, 2 miles tomorrow short intense.

Slightly fatigued, sore legs. Not bad.

I have been increasing milage as follows:

add 2 miles
next week add 4
add 2
next week add 4
till I get to 30.

Happy Friday Everyone!

Sorry I haven't posted in a while. Still in California (since May 3rd). I fly back home next Thursday :( and it will be hard to leave my best friend..I hadn't seen him in over 3 years.

He has refused to even think about the gym so my plan to use his gym every day didn't work and so I have been working out by brisk walking for 2 hours everyday and just doing ab work, and my pilates video tape when possible.

I had some fun exercising this last evening because in addition to my usual 2 hour walk because he took me to a latin club and we spent the rest of the evening emersed in salsa and merengue dancing (until 2 a.m. )

Today...

It will just be the usual walk and ab work. I love working out outside but I can't wait to get back to the gym. I saw these "water" weights online (I think it was aqualbells or something like that... www.aquabells.com I think) and I am going to purchase a pair so the next time I am out of town; each dumbbell can provide up to 16 pounds of resistence... I will have a better back up plan in the event that a gym is not accessible; .

Welcome aboard Daisy! I am impressed you are doing so much already!!!! When I first started training for my first marathon I started by walking and actually was planning on walking the entire marathon....I simply got BORED and started jogging a bit here and there to kill time!!!! and voila! Here I am! I am not back to the point of running 70 miles a week  like before my accident (broke femur in January) but I am getting there! And, here's my plug :D .....IF ANYONE OF YOU IS INTERESTED I AM ALSO A "RACE DIRECTOR" FOR A LOCAL 10K RUN,WALK,CYCLE,BLADE RACE HERE ON AUGUST 5TH +++++++ I am a member of the Children's Tumor Foundation and run various races around the country for it too! You don't have to be an elite athlete! Just someone who wants to make a difference for the greater good. My son Joshua (age 9) has neurofibromatosis ("nf") which is why I am on the team.....YOU CAN BE TOO! If you want to learn more go to www.ctf.org But seriously, I would love to have some rawrunners come to my event!!!! I am the only raw vegan I know around here!!!!!!

OK, I'll quit advertising. Hey Todd, like the turtle icon? Suits me after my comeback don't you think? Yesterday I did a long run (11 miles) on my treadmill because it was windy and "iffy" out here in northern new york so I didn't want to risk it before Ottawa next week. I know I should "taper" this week but I have never really been one to do that. Hey, I did sleep in today until 7 a.m.!!! That's pretty good for me! I'll go swimming here in a bit (after church) but other than that it's Sunday, so my exercise may be mounds of laundry and some cleaning followed by a cool down of food prep....!!!! ;)

MONDAYS- walk 2 miles, bike 2 miles, home exerciese (pushups, crunches, ect.), self-defense class

TUESDAYS- gym (walk 2 miles, stationary bike, weights)

WEDNESDAYS- walk 2, bike 2, hom exercises, bodyflow (combo. of yoga, tai chi, and pilates)

THURSDAYS- gym, yoga

FRIDAYS- walk 2, bike 2, home exercises, bodyflow

SATURDAYS- gym, bodyflow

SUNDAYS- walk 2, bike 2, home exerciese (unless I'm completely exhausted I may rest).

What do you all think? My biking is not vigerous, just leisurly, but on A LOT of hills.

This is starting after months of sitting on my butt all day lol

Hehe, I don't run. I was in gymnastics so that required sprinting which I did really well at and could go super fast, but only short distances. My friends laughed at me in HS because I literally could not jog/run. I can either walk or sprint lol. I don't like running in public now anyway, too embarassing for me. Today was leg day. I felt a slight drop in energy and of course 3 bms this am let me know it was mild detox. But I gutting out my workout anyways, it took me a little longer than usual (I don't like that), but I eclipsed my previous volume best.

5 sets of barbell squats (102 total reps)
3 sets of stiff-legged deadlifts
2 sets of walking db lunges
2 sets of bulgarian squats (killers)
3 sets of standing db toe raises (50 reps each)
3 sets of seated db toe raises (50 reps each).

I do the deadlift as it is described in bodybuilding.com

http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/exercises.php?Name=Barbell+Deadlift

I use the reverse grip. If you are not feeling anything, it could be because of one of several things, first, make sure your technique is flawless (as you have inquired) and secondly make sure you are using enough weight to feel it (at least bodyweight is my recommendation).

3 sets of db inclines (all drop sets)
3 sets of db declines (all drop sets)
3 sets of standing toe raises with db
3 sets of seated toe raises with db

Wasn't able to do the 80lb dbs today. I swallowed my pride and used the 70s. But I increased my volume by adding an extra drop set and more reps. Overall I only decreased my average poundage by a pound so it wasn't too bad. As usual, I got a tremendous pump.

I AM PROUD OF MYSELF ((brag, brag)) I ran the Ottawa Half Marathon yesterday feeling great. Did not wear a watch, nor did I have a clue how long it was taking. My goal was just to run it pain free! You have no idea what a ((glow)) this gives me. I was a bit hesitant that I would NOT be able to race again....But that's because I have the voices of "the doctors" in my head. Well, let me tell ya, I can't wait to send my orthopedic surgeon a picture and a letter. He will be pleasantly surprised!!!!

I had my "power smoothie" + juice and some fruit prior as well as a couple "100% raw organic food bars" prior and water only during...There were runners dropping out (quite a few) due to the heat but I was "runnin' raw" and energetic!!!!

And afterward we found a vegetarian restaurant that had many raw dishes.... It was awesome! My (SAD) husband even loved it! I am so proud of him for running with me and trying the restaurant!!! Yes, I do have 5 kids!! ((Why do you think I run?????????????? SANITY!!! )...I am "switching it up" this week so as to allow my legs to recuperate...well, sort of. On Tuesday I walkd about 7 miles (5% incline) on my treadmill at 4 mph + swam 50 laps (about 1.2 miles?) and this morning I rode my bike at sunrise :) in my hilly area for a little over an hour....Do you think I'd be ok to run tomorrow??? My legs feel great! Swimming was the best yesterday...needed that cool water...It's finally warming up around here in snow country!!! The sunrise was just coming up on the horizon this a.m. as I was "coasting" down a HUGE hill...It made me "misty-eyed" with the beauty + endorphins. I just praise GOD for my recovery. It makes the little things I am capable of that much sweeter now! It's a beautiful day!!! (WOW...think I still have endorphins coursing through my veins!!! :D )

yes, todd we went to a vegetarian restaurant with many raw dishes...I really liked the "setup". It was "elegant cafeteria style" You went to 2 different "buffet" sections to choose your food...everything was labled with ingredients, etc...Then they weighed your plate and you paid by the amount of food....How cool is that? OK maybe in bigger cities this is common but I live in a rinky dink village in (very) northern NY...You could also get takeout there. I was thinking what a great idea for my area....We need something like that!!! It was very eco-friendly and a nice atmosphere with like minded obviously health concious people....I felt at home!!! Happy Trails everyone!

I am behind in my logging but not in my work outs...

I worked up to 6 mile runs over the last 6 weeks. I have been logging in about 25-30 miles.

This week I needed a "rest" so I decided to just do timed cardio and not track milage and add in some Step Cardio, walking and circuit weights three days.

So Sunday and Mon I ran 30 min each day
Tues Wed Thurs and Friday I did 60-90 min mixed cardio, some running.
I did weights two days.

When I first started running my pants got very tight in the thighs and my quads looked fatter, now the fat is reducing and I am seeing more muscular runners quads.

My diet is looking more fruity !! ;) and less nutty !! :)

I am trying to look less like a Bodybuilder, more long and lean like a dancer runner like I did when I was younger. My arms finally lost that bulky look, but I still have a nice bicep and wider shoulder ..now for the legs, come on baby where are you ?!!

Hello everyone,

I must say that this thread is indeed inspiring! I feel that what helps me the most when sticking to an exercise routine is to identify why I am doing these things. Then I am more likely to stick with it and feel good doing it, not like it's a chore or something. I truly enjoy taking care of my body because it makes me feel good.

I do my neck stretches everyday because I want to stand up straight without looking hunched over, and so I can help myself be free of neck and back pain.

I do bridges and leg lifts while bridging so my legs will be strong and to improve my overall balance.

I stretch my hamstring and quad muscles so I will be able to move freely without pulling a muscle in my legs.

I do abdominals everyday so that I am able to keep my body upright and more balanced. Having a strong core makes me feel strong and also assists me in making better food choices.

All of these exercises help me with my confidence levels and make me feel alive.

I'd love to hear more about why everyone is doing these things. Try it and see how it makes you feel!

Today I walked 4 miles down Sylvan Hill into Portland. The only problem I had was that the steep downhill walk made my foot slide forward in my shoe and I have the beginnings of a blister! OUCH!

But.. this is a GOOD thing. I need to know this can happen. So I walked to the drugstore and got some footcare items - now I need to find an insert to put into my shoe so my foot doesn't slide on those downhill walks.

I'm hoping to lose some weight before I leave so I can fit into my size 8 pants that the legs zip off....

Today was shoulders/arms day.......I did legs yesterday. I came to the conclusion that I was in the beginning stages of overtraining. Its so easy to do when you get into working out whether that be running and/or weights. I have done it many times before so I am on the watch for it. One of the safeguards I instituted in January was to make it a rule to finish my workout within one hour. For me, my workouts start to go into 90-120 minutes or more when I am over doing it. For the last few weeks this has been happening and I have been feeling it. So I swallowed my pride and cut my volume way back. So far it has worked great! My body feels fresh and not worn after a workout and I am feeling much better overall. "Stimulate and don't annihilate" was what one famous bodybuilder said, I am finding out what that means. So I cut down on the number of drop sets I am doing and will increase my volume at a much slower pace.

Today's workout was:

2 sets of inverted pushups
2 sets of bicep curls/lying extensions super-setted
2 sets of hammer curls/tricep extensions super-setted
2 sets of db concentration curls
3 sets of db military shoulder presses
2 sets of db standing lateral raise
2 sets of db bent lateral raises.

All done well within an hour.

4 mile walk.

Peace.

Hello everyone,

I'd love to hear more about why everyone is doing these things. Try it and see how it makes you feel!

It's nice to "see" some new faces on this thread! Personally, I work out because "I can..." OK, not meant to sound as smug as that but back in January (5 months ago yesterday to be precise! ) I broke the femoral neck of my right leg had emergency surgery and now sport a metal plate, rod and 4 screws accompanied by a "lovely" scar! Being able to run, bike, swim, WALK even is something I learned to do all over again...It's a precious gift we ALL have to be able to use and push our bodies to their limits. One that I will never take for granted again! I exercise to feel good...about myself, my life, etc...It's my "time-out" to think, pray, "meditate", plan...a day without a workout makes me disheveled and "cranky" so I guess my body is just used to it and NEEDS it like some people need that a.m. cup of coffee!!!

Todd, I know what you mean by "overdoing it!" I used to pile on the mileage thinking I HAD to do more, get better, RUN EVERY DAY...etc...I am keeping that same concept (one hour) in mind right now too when it comes to running before school! It is so easy to go "just a little longer/further"....
Monday I ran 6.5 miles + swam 50 laps at YMCA
Tuesday-getting ready to bike!!! (see, I am TRYING to "mix it up :D ")

I love your attitude! I also use exercise to meditate and just BE.
It feels as though it is taking a long time for my body to heal, but I know that I just have to keep doing what I'm doing so I can once again enjoy running, climbing, jumping and any other activity which requires me to move my body to it's limits. I sure do miss running but I have to build up to it first by walking.

I dream of running in the soft sand with the sun beaming down on my face and the cool breeze coming off the ocean relieving me from the heat.

This will happen soon, I can feel it!

I am SO exhausted from yesterday that I'm having today as my break. I got out of english and drove to the gym and made it just in time for the yoga I'm not normally able to make. I did that and that's all today. My arms are SO weak from last night in SD. I could barely hold myslef in plant or updog lol...that's sad!
