I notice alot of people making a point about not eating soy - what's wrong with soy?
I saw chickpea miso at the grocery store the other day but $11.00!!! The soy miso was about $3.00. Why is soy so much worse?
Thanks,
Catherine

Briefly, these seem to be the main issues with soy...
1) Soybeans are one of the most genetically modified foods in the world
2) Eating much soy stimulates hormonal changes many find aalarming, such as very early puberty. Some concerned pediatricians are now calling for children to be limited to no more than one serving of a soy based product per week. But that would be difficult in even a conventional SAD household, since soy is now incorporated in so many other foods.
3) The finished products made from it are usually very heavily processed. Tofu, as a good vegan friend ruefully admitted, is more intensely processed than many SAD foods.
4) Soybeans don't lend themselves well to standard raw techniques of soaking and sprouting.

Thank you for the info.
Good links Jennah - alot of info to digest but very interesting.

I used to eat a lot of soy, especially tofu, before I went raw. Now I never eat it, but because it has to be cooked rather than because I have worries about its safety (provided it's non-GMO).
I have no axe to grind on this, but I do find the tone of some of the anti-soy articles very strident. If you want to read the other side of the story, here are a couple of thought-provoking and interesting threads:

Another reason to avoid soy is that it can affect the thyroid. I used to eat a lot of soy. I developed a thyroid problem while pregnant. When I learned of the soy/thyroid connection, I made an effort to avoid all soy. I am no longer on thyroid meds.
