View Full Version : Things not to do!

So what are the things you've learned 'not to do' while eating raw? I know the most obvious one is don't eat cooked food! :) and another commonly talked about thing is food combining. What are other things that you've learned that just don't work for you? I'll start this one off..
Do not indluge in two types of juices that are known to be 'cleansing' in one day. I tried wheatgrass juice for the frist time yesterday, I mixed it with orange juice and it was OK. I only had an ounce as I had read in several places that you need to start off small and I cut the grass well above the white roots to keep away from any mold. Well a few hours later I started to feel a little yucky and had a headache. I tried to eat dinner, had a few bites of cooked food, and felt yuckier. Well whenever I've felt yucky I normally do a smoothie of an apple, lemon, and parsley. It helps make me feel better but I wasn't in the mood for a smoothie so I made some lemonaid instead using lemon juice, water, and agave syrup. That tasted _sooo_ good that I had three glasses of it. :D Unfortunately I was wrechedly sick a few hours later and still am. I don't think my stomach is going to forgive me that one. I guess if I wanted to look on the positive side I know that those few bites of cooked food are _not_ in my system anymore. :o

Ummm....
How about DONT confuse nighttime cravings with your glucose just dropping? Ppl blame raw & eat crap at night because they think raw isnt giving them what they are needing.
DONT live less than 100% & come here to tell others how to be 100% (yes, it's happening)
DONT eat unripened fruit.
DONT let ppl less than 100% raw lead you. They fall for many reasons & you will too.

why not? even if they are not committed to it, that doesn't necessarily mean they can't help others, right?

Do you really need an answer?
If they arent living 100%, they have NO idea how to tell others how to do it.
Tell ppl how YOU are DOING it. Not how you SHOULD do it.
There's a difference. Much more info can come from someone who is there, rather those who WANT to but cant.

ljannise,
your post upset me, as a not 100% raw person, so i feel like i need to respond.
first of all, of course you are right - if you want to be 100%, then listen to someone who has been successful at being 100%, of course.
that being said, when i think about the people who have helped me with their wisdom on this board over the past 6 months i have been here, many of them are not 100%. I believe that everyone has something to teach/offer - and that is their experience. someone who cannot get 2 days together can help a person too.
i have been in the raw world for a long time, sometimes 100%, sometimes not, and to be honest - when i leave this lifestyle, as i have in the past, it is because i cannot handle all the "100%! 100% bs and people thinking that they are BETTER than anybody else because of what they eat!!!!!
the reason i like this board versus the rest of the raw world, is that we are all about love and acceptance - there is no judgement here or people being better or worse...
i guess that is why your post upset me, it was the first time ever i had seen anything written here that made me feel "less than" for the place where i am in my path.

Great thread! Here are a few of my don'ts about raw food:
Don't lose your sense of humor about all this.
Don't get overly serious and sour about it
Don't get rigid and dogmatic about it
Don't think YOUR way is the ONLY way
Don't stress over things you can't control
Don't stress over things you can control
Don't stress over things
And, to be doubly sure you get this one, I repeat - Don't lose your sense of humor about all this.
I mean, after all, in the end you're still going to die anyway. :)

Thanks Shivananda!
I would say don't go against your gut instinct....
Don't get mad at yourself if you slip
Don't eat foods that cause negative reactions--either emotionally or physically -within you
IMO, don't preach to others why their food choices are WRONG--people learn by attraction not promotion.
Don't feel like you are on a diet, resticted or deprived...This is a lifestyle and a great choice of a way to LIVE.
AND most inportantly--don't STARVE~~ like Mrs Clause said to Santa "Eat papa eat:)!!"

It's easy to get so serious about it that it becomes a burden at times, so I say:
DON'T LOSE YOUR SENSE OF FUN!

I consider myself to be 100% but I know that there are people here who are less but know much more. I am very happy to receive their information and wisdom any time and I have learned so much even from people who are 80%. I am talking about facts. I do not rely on them for my motivation but this board is about passing on tips and guidlines as well as motivation.
When I started out I was not short of motivation but I would probably have given up but for the facts that I have learned here. I want to thank everyone for that.

Could you please explain glucose dropping in the evening. I think I can identify and have bigtime cravings.

Ok, we all have a curve that our glucose takes. I had to learn about diabetes & our blood glucose when my feline was diagnosed. That will sound silly with a lot of ppl, but I am a diabetic kitty mommy. And I learned that feline diabetes is the exact SAME as human diabetes.
Anyways, that's why your body recognises lunch time, your glucose is dropping & you become "hungry". That's why starches are such a no-no to a lot of ppl because it skyrockets your glucose & you fall very low (making you hungry so early again)
JUST AN EXAMPLE--- (some ppl are different in their curve times & diabetics are "high", as opposed to a regular 100+) A "curve" is the route your glucose takes when you are regular (in the AM)... around lunch time, the glucose drops down (you get hungry) & it creates the curve as it travels back up to the afternoon.
Your glucose drops in the evening. I know this now so my night time binges have stopped. This helped me lose a LOT of weight. I know the reasoning behind it now & I know to not blame Raw & I grab something healthy instead because I know seeing it through will be worth it in the morning.
Has this been a help to ANYONE?

ljannise,
Yes, the glucose info was very helpful. Sometimes it is hard to reach for the right thing when the craving/hunger hits. Understanding the body chemistry and what to expect sure eases things.
In health.

Yes. I have an argument in my head that goes like this: "I need blah blah blah grams of carbohydrate so I can ride my bike tomorrow another 5 hours like I did the day before and the day before that and for the next so many days at such and such intensity." I'll get
REAL hungry even at 10 or 11pm and eat 5 or 6 Cliff bars right before putting my head on the pillow. It is real hard for me to discern a probable glucose drop but maybe I got in a habit of doing this binge (starches) before bed and my body has adjusted a drop for that time! Like you said about lunch time etc. Hmmm.
So in your circumstance, for you to reach for something healthy instead of starchy did you find you kinda got a reset or new habit that gave you satiation or something to that effect? m

When cravings for "somethings missing" comes up, do NOT run for the nuts! I end up eating too many and not being very happy about it later.
Now, when those cravings come up for me I have learned to recognize that it's actually fat that I'm craving. A spoonful of coconut oil does the trick and my skin loves me for it.
Another don't that I follow is the one about preaching to those who are not interested. Do NOT waste your time. Instead, live the live and be an example. Those who are sincerely ready to receive will ask and be grateful for the advice.

Umm... yes, LOL! Completely satisfied. My vice is blueberries or clementines.
Dont think of fruit carbs as candy bar carbs. (energy bars, whatever)
And STOP being addicted to carbs for your energy needs. This lifestyle is to allow you to take a step back & enjoy life the way you were supposed to before.
Find the names of the raw vegan runners, bodybuilders, etc You dont have to have all that sugar PLUS your body will perform so much better without it.

Thanks man. I do have to get around the carb thing. I do recall a while back in a thread, that some gal spoke of her ultra distance cycling brother in- law(I think) that is raw. I however for the life of me can't remember who this was so I could maybe contact this guy. Oh well, I keep looking.
Good chattin' with ya. m

Dont expect to lose weight on raw by sitting around on your butt all day stuffing yourself with nuts and avocados and then when you realize that you've gained 10 pounds by doing this, dont claim that "raw food dosent work" and go back to SAD food. You can easily be 100% raw and still make unhealthy choices so its best to be well informed about raw before jumping in.
Read a book about raw, get all the info you can rather than just assuming you know what your doing.
