I've yet to try making my own sprouted breads (I don't have a dehydrator right now), so I've been relying on brands like Earth and Seed and Manna breads. The ingredients say that they only use ingredients like sprouted sun flour seeds, wheat berries, flax seeds, etc. and that they use no oils or sweetners, but what I can't understand is why (in either brand) there is a sweet, sticky layer on the bottom. I don't know about the other types because I haven't eaten them, but in the types I get, there aren't even dates or raisins included in the recipes, so I'm just not sure where this sweet layer comes from. Does this just naturally happen when making sprouted bread?

These are baked breads, not raw breads, right?
Well - that's not your question, so I won't even delve into that aspect. :p
When wheat is sprouted, the starch is converted into simple sugars which makes a sweet tasting dough.

You're right, I know, they're not fully raw :o . I don't have, well, any capabilities for making my own raw bread right now, so I'm relying on bread that is almost raw. I go back home (I'm living in Hawaii right now, going to college, and living in a tiny dorm) in a month and then I will have everything I want to make a bunch of recipes I have been dying to try. Until then, it's a lot of fruits, salads, and things that don't need any preparation (like Manna bread) ;) .
Ah, that makes sense because wheat is obviously used in so many of their recipes. Thank you! I was starting to think they had lied and really were using sweetners! Sigh, getting so pessimistic about pre-made food in America...

Have you considered just not eating bread? When I went raw, I didn't make or eat raw breads -- still don't. In fact, I don't really eat any grains. It's totally do-able to be raw and not eat these things. I've done it for almost 1-1/2 years and I'm a very happy raw fooder!!

When I started being raw about 6 months ago (wow I can't believe it's been that long), I didn't eat bread, but that's because I was at home and had a lot of fruits and vegetables that would fill me up. But, living on a college budget and fruits and vegetables being so expensive here in Hawaii, I find it very hard to live only on fruits and veggies. Like I said, I have only a month and a half more and then I will return to lovely California, when it will be the start of summer, and I can buy all the lovely raw food I need.
