View Full Version : Speeding up the forum experience on dial-up connections

Another user's complaint about the length of time it took long threads to load on her dial-up connection reminded me that not everyone knows how much control you have over your own experience of this forum. It really is a remarkably flexible system compared to most.

To acces your controls, select the User Control Panel (USER CP, under the peppers), then Edit Options (on the left side) then go down to Thread Display Options. You can turn off (or on) the display of people's avatars, signatures and images. Turning them off just shows you the text and makes everything load much faster.

Changing Number of Posts to show only 5 posts at a time speeds up the loading of each page.

Changing Thread Display Mode allows you to determine how you want the posts to display... oldest first, newest first (so you can skip right to the end), or Threaded and Hybrid, which add a graphic display of the entire thread at the top of the page so you can pick and choose what you want to read and therefore, what has to get loaded, rather than just loading everything.

Following all the above suggestions you can easily double your effective download speed for posts here.

In answer to the where is question.

people come and go, they fall off the raw wagon, and asking where someone is can cause them alot of embarassment if they are lurking.

We must allow each person their privacy and everyone has their own reasons for posting, or lurking or leaving and moving on to another forum, or opening up their own.

Alissa has asked that we use the forum for supporting each other on the raw food lifestyle, and not to post these type of "where is so and so" threads

shiva has his email address posted in his profile, so if you want to contact him you can email him directly and ask him where he's been and what he's been up to.
