Do you now find yourself looking at other people's carts and wanting to lecture on how bad their food choices are? I know I do now. My parents were joking that if I worked at a restaurant or groccery cashier that I'd always say "do you know how bad this is for you..." I'd probably get fired haha. Sometimes I see their carts before I see the people and I can accurately guess if they have puffiness, acne, red faces, ect. from the foods they choose.

Also, everytime I'm in line with my plain salad bar, vegetables, and fruit people ask if i'm on a diet or something or just make a comment that I'm too healthy (in a mocking way). I think it's amusing actually. How can they think being healthy is a bad thing and that eating junk "once in a while" is good for them like a treat? I also think it's amusing when I get a new cashier that doesn't know ANY of the codes, but sometimes they don't even know the food (that's a little scary that they don't know lettuces or fruits!).

What are your experiances? :p

HI there!

People ask me, "what are you going to do with all that produce?"

One time, I had so much in my cart of different kinds of produce that
the person behind me became very angry because they had to wait while the new cashier looked up ALL the codes for each one. I must have had at least 50 different codes worth of produce to ring up and the guy behind me said,"would you PLEASE hurry up, I want to get out of here now."

Several times I've had the cashier ring up produce with the wrong code because they didn't know what the item was.

I know what you mean about peoples' shopping carts. Sometimes while waiting in line I just want to tell the people standing there all about the food they are eating and why it's so bad for them,, LOL. Or that drinking the juice from carrot, parsley, spinich and celery will help their little ones to grow up strong and healthy, ect. ect. ect. I'ts almost overwhelming at times, :D

Good question :)

:) I am always doing that! I can hardly stomach all the meat I see in peoples carts.

On the flip side, other people look into my cart and say stuff like, "Are you going to EAT all of that?" I say, "Well, uh, yeah."

I never feel the need to lecture anyone about anything. Although I do cringe when I see some of the stuff in other people's carts, I sure wouldn't comment to them on it. Now I have had people come up to me and ask me for advice about food. They're always friendly and polite. I've also had people comment on my salads from the salad bar telling me that they look soooo good and they wish they could concoct something that looks that good.

I do I do .. it's funny you'd say this.

I see people with chips, cookies, cakes, candy and other horrid snacks in their carts... and a case of DIET coke! They're all swollen and puffy and unhealthy looking and I'm thinking.... "Are you nuts? What planet did you come from?" Sometimes I feel sorry for them, but mostly I feel sorry for their kids who are learning the same horrible eating habits.

The guy behind you who wanted you to hurry? I'd just smile and hold my ground. One pet peeve of mine "these days" is how rushed I feel in the grocery line. I can't even take the time to put away my receipt and change and they're ringing up the next person while pushing me through. It's annoying as heck.

People need to just get over it.

it made my stomach turn but I wonder--what do the kids think about all that blood???
my dh told me it was either roast beef or corned beef....*shivers*

hey dreamrawalwz, this is great question:

Crystl-jade,

People ask me, "what are you going to do with all that produce?"

One time, I had so much in my cart of different kinds of produce that
the person behind me became very angry because they had to wait while the new cashier looked up ALL the codes for each one. I must have had at least 50 different codes worth of produce to ring up and the guy behind me said,"would you PLEASE hurry up, I want to get out of here now."

I'd have to agree with RowanC about standing your ground.
I was in the store the other day getting a bunch of fruits and veggies. And the cashier said ..wow this is a lot of produce! Are you veggie freak or what? I said yep I just likem. This cashier guy was having to read through the catalog to find the produces numbers......and then He started to have this attitude all of the sudden,( proably because he was having a problem finding the codes), he said do you eat this crap all the time - as he take a swig of he'd diet drink. I sad sure, do you drink that crap all the time? He was sorta startled that I asked him the same questioned back to him. He said well, this stuff tastes really good and it gives me a burst of energy! I said well isn't that great for you - mine does the same thing but with much less chemicals. Then this married couple behind me were getting impatient becuase the cashier was having problems. The husband said " Mr. garden, can you move it along" I said Mr. junk man - why don't you eat one of your twinkies you have in your cart, while your waiting or better yet there's 30 of cashiers waiting to serve you! :D

In the days that I used to buy meat for my husband (history) I would take some plastic bags from the produce section and double wrap the prepacked meat without touching it and then place it at the back of the trolly. I would put it on the belt last so that it did not touch my food (or the real food as I used to call it).
One day I got home without the meat and realised that I had left it on the end of the belt and that it had not moved up and I had not noticed.
Another day I was outside the store when I found a pack of smoked salmon still laying up against the back of the trolly and not paid for. I was lucky that my paranoia did not get me in serious trouble.

yes i do find myself looking at others trolleys. its wierd.
i also find when in a restaurant i have to stop myself making comments. my mother-in-law was eating some cooked stuffed mushrooms with roasted peppers, and she said mmh these are so tasty, i had to stop myself saying that actually they would be more tasty raw.
anyway, at least it shows we are happy on raw,

best wishes

Wow. so funny because I had an interesting check-out line chat with another mom yesterday morning ! My childrens school is having a bake sale and I was assigned Rice krispie treats. I have never made them before, even before Raw Food my family never ate that stuff !
So i'm reading the box and a mom with 2 kids in front of me must see the ingredients on the belt and asks me if i'm making rice krispie treats, so I reply yes, but I have never made them before can you give me any suggestions. You should have seen the look on her face  !
and then I explained that my family doesn't eat these things and of course she wanted to know why not. I simply told her too much sugar and I try to limit their sugar intake.
Ok this is the unbelievable part... she then actually tried to convince me that rice krispie treats are a healthy snack !! and picked up the marshmellow bag and said "see it's not that much sugar !" I was completely dumb founded by this woman. I was so thankfull she had paid and her kids were tugging on her to go because I think I was just staring at her in total amazment and at that moment couldn't think of anyway to reasonably answer this woman.

I buy so little at our local conventional grocery store these days but it does blow me away what people are feeding their kids !

I work at a grocery store so I see the junk people put in their carts ALL the time. And there's some people who do eat very healthy judging by what they have in their cart.

Oh, I almost forgot to add, I hate it when customers ask me if I tried something that's I don't consume.

RowanC,

One pet peeve of mine "these days" is how rushed I feel in the grocery line. I can't even take the time to put away my receipt and change and they're ringing up the next person while pushing me through. It's annoying as heck.

It is SO annoying! Because they give you the change and receipt all in the same hand and its like okay, change goes in this part of my wallet...unzip, put change in, zip...dollars go here...and of course i can NEVER fit the dollars into my wallet in a hurry without them turning into a big crumply mess making my wallet all fat, and then the receipt goes in the bag....and now I have to put my wallet back into my purse, close my purse...grab my grocery bags...and I'm supposed to do all of this in oh....THREE SECONDS ?!! Right.

lol :p :D

Chrstn4ptsrc2me,

I work at a grocery store so I see the junk people put in their carts ALL the time.

My boyfriend said I should work at Whole Foods because I love going there, but I wouldn't be able to stand ringing up the stuff that people buy! I'd have like a disgusted scowl on my face :o also, Whole Foods smells too much like stinky cheese for me to be there all day :p :o

This was a great thread to read!! There is so much truth to it all!!
I myself am at times very judgemental of what others have in their carts.
Human nature!!!

Let's just keep setting the right example!

That's funny. I always get asked, "Are you on a diet or something?" I always look confused, I just don't think of it as a diet and I wonder if they are just thinking that I NEED to be. Oh well. I feel really good. I do peek in other's carts too. The worst was when my mom was is the hospital and I had to go to the grocery store for my little brother. I was mortified at what was in my cart and felt compelled to vociferously proclaim to everyone who glanced in my direction, "IT"S NOT MINE!" My mother even asked me later on if it was traumatic for me. I laughed, but it was!!!

I'm like that too! If I'm out with someone to the store or even my dad I'm embarassed with waht's in the cart. I feel like I have to deny it's mine, but I don't...I just never look the cashier in the eye and don't carry the bags of non-produce food lol.

Ok.. I was lectured myself last night about lecturing my son.. he is a cooked vegan but not really for health purposes.. mostly to stand against cruelty for animals.. I tried to discuss the health aspect of what he eats now.or doesn't eat.. as he has complained his hair is thining...But he used some pretty big words to tell me to respect him for not pushing PETA on me and please do not push my "religion of eating" on him. so I dropped the subject...

also...I have a daughter who has kids... and she is a sugar freak... turning her kids into sugar freaks.. I have lectured and lectured her on the terrors of sugars and processed foods till I am blue in the face.. She is not raw now but seems to be moving further and further away from the sugar..doesn't have quite so much in the house... crossing fingers that some day she will be raw. Her oldest son has now started talking about the bad things too from eating sugar.. guess he's been around me too long.

I am out of a job now and have seriously thought of going to Whole Foods.. do not know if I could stand on my feet that long anymore... but well worth the try... I am still heavy even though I am pretty much raw.. still have my slide back days... but have been drinking lemon water in the am instead of coffee, and two quarts of green smoothies with apples every day now for a week... Wondering if I could make it...

...and then place it at the back of the trolly.
I have always been charmed by a lilting Irish accent, and your use of the term "trolly" brought that affection to mind. In the midwest US, and western US the term most often used is "cart", or "shopping cart." Here in the Northeast US the usual term, however, seems to be "carriage."

One would think that when I go shopping here and refer to my trolly as a cart, instead of a carriage, people would be charmed by MY lilting accent, but noooooooooooooooooo.

Oh I'm amused! Reminds me of high school when my best friend and I used to go about speaking in a british accent because well, who knows why. It cracked us up and as we worked at the same place "regulars" actually thought we were british! The worst part was that we never stuck with the same accent for more than a week. Noone really ever caught on...

I love these stories! I do look at what people have in their carts and while I would never say anything outloud to them I am sure "thinking" of what I'd like to say.

A few weeks ago I was in our local Central Market and had my cart filled with fruits, veggies, and a ton of greens as I am doing a lot of juicing right now. Obviously my cart looked very different from everyone elses.

I was standing in line at the pharmacy department to get a prescription for my mom and this older gentleman in front of me turned around to smile and glanced in my cart. He said, if you eat all that healthy food why would you need a prescription? And I said, oh the medication is for my 85 year old mother! He laughed and said I should be feeding her all those fruits and veggies instead! I said, well I do but she still has her sugary treats too and she'd put up such a fuss if I didn't give them to her.

So after he'd received his bag of meds at the pharmacy counter he turns around and says to me, these are for my wife and not me... really! Ha! It really was funny! I wonder if he really thought the meds I was getting were for my mom or me?!

raw meat has always grossed me out even when I use to eat it. meat on the bone is especially gross.

I look at grocery carts all the time. The loads of sugary stuff always baffles me. Especially when there a re screamy cranky loud kids in tow, begging for more...

I really feel sorry for obese children who have no idea what there parents are doing to them.

Loads of canned goods baffle me too.

I have a right to purchase what I want, and so does anyone else. I don't think negative thoughts about heavy people (as I am heavy) and I don't think what people are buying is a problem, it is their choice to eat what they want,

What IS the problem, or challenge is the corporations that make this stuff, and advertise this stuff, and the doctors who won't tell you it's bad for you, and the schools that have it in vending machines in the school lunch room, and and and.

I also have a right to finish my purchase, pay with cash or a check, put things back into my pocket, and check my receipt BEFORE, I leave the store.

I will NOT allow anyone to hurry ME, because THEY chose to be late.

I have plenty of time for anyone in front of me, and often when someone is taking a long time in front of me in line, and someone behind me says something.

I tell the person in line, to take their time, because I am self employed and have all the time in the world.

I do alot of inernet and ebay business, and was going to the post office every Friday to do mailings, well, our business is doing so well, that it would sometimes take us 30 minutes to get through all of our mail, and people behind us would get upset. I told the clerk (there is only one) to take her time, she can help only one person at a time, and that each person in line would be given the exact same great service that she had given me, so not to worry.

People who are rushed are upset, NOT at the person in front of them, they are upset at themselves for NOT getting up early, or for sleeping in too late, or staying up late the night before, etc. etc. etc.

so don't ever take it personally, and remember to be kind and loving to all those people in front of you, because one day, you too, may need a few extra seconds, to write a check, or check a receipt, or to help someone else who needs help.

Life is a journey, enjoy it.

I was in a super Wal mart one day and I passed a family that I will never forget. It was a mother, grandmother and three daughters ( I assume). The mother was in a scooter because she weighed probably over 400lbs, the daughters were all well over 250, and their grandmother was the smallest at probably 200. the daughters and the gm were all probably like 5 foot 2 or so to put the weight into perspective, and the gm was eating mcdonald's french fries. I looked into their cart and it was stacked to the top, with, drumroll, please.... BANQUET FROZEN DINNERS  . Not even frozen veggies, it was all mac and cheese, and meatloaf and stuff from what I could see. It amazes me that such ignorance exists!

So true! I get so angry when I think about this to long because I have been searching all my life for something that will "get the weight off" and make my body from hurting. All my years I have been told just to eat right.. But was never really told how to. Dr and such would just hint that we were to eat more veggies and my mind just said ewwww.. never have been one for veggies..

But now after having been doing raw almost 100% I understand where we have gone arong and that I just never took the time to research it..

Now when I see people in the stores like those that you saw.. I just want to hand out some sort of paper handout.. hoping they would take the time to do some research.

I had prayed and prayed for such a secret to be told to me. and my prayers have now been answered.. too bad it was shown to me at the late age of 49.

I was at the grocery store today. It was a busy day with the line moving really slow. If there was a race the snails would win!!

So ahead of me I saw boxes of breakfast cereals being scanned, soda drinks, sushis, milk cartons... I do not really look into others cart anyhow I had my basket on the floor between my feet. It was a busy day and I did not want to take too much space. This guy in the next line kept looking at my feet. He kept glancing which made me look down for he had a wonderment look on his face because in my basket I forgotten I had but 3 good-sized boxes of fresh plump looking durians, 2 coconuts and an avocado. He must be wondering what is this lady gonna be concocting at home with those ingredients??

After what seemed like forever, it was almost my turn to be scanned, I did some twists to release my spine and I noticed an expecting lady behind me with but a carton of apple juice, well at least it was an apple juice. So I let her through first and she was so grateful and she smiled gleefully! And there was a lady next in line with just a mineral water and I jokingly told her, 'Well you are not expecting' which made her laugh. So I am glad in this rushing mad world I put a smile on 2 people and broke the tensions and made a guy worried for me :D

last night at Wall mart I saw 300 + pound women in scooters because they were too fat to walk. I saw not only one, but two or three by the time I was done checking out. The one lady must have been only 5'3 and her daughter said," How many cases of macaroni and cheese do you want? The Mother said," oh, well, lets see, we need frozen corn dogs, five pizzas and ice cream, so just get 3 cases."

I don't really care what other people have in their cart. I try
not to look so I don't make an ugly face at it. I don't lecture,
I try to remember when I ate unhealthy food... it doesn't matter
what the health freak (me) says, they already know but choose to ignore.
I have long since given up on trying to change others, you can only
change yourself & hope that inspires others.

When I am in line with my fruits & veggies, people just gawk at it,
then they stare at me. I know it must look very odd to them.
Someone said, "wow you have enough produce for a week". I said "well,
it's just for a day actually". More stares:  I think it's hilarious. :D

I was at Micky D's yesterday, I got a salad, with everything on the side, and some fresh lemon wedges, we were on the road and going to a fair. I had fruit in the car, but wanted some fresh greens.

there were really beautiful, fresh greens, some deep purple, some red, cabbage, carrotts, tomatoes, and spinach, I had to stop when I got to the arugula, (hate that stuff, and it grows wild at our house) ICK, anyway, it was delicious, all the stuff, they thought was good, I gave to my dog.

But, while I was there, and they made my salad up fresh, which took about 10 minutes, I got to see alot of people coming in to this fast food place,

every single one of them was heavy, and I don't mean 40 or 50 pounds heavy, I mean at least 100 pounds overweight.

I am still a big person myself, but these people were huge, and very young people too, I'd say the average person there was about 300 pounds and about 20 years old.

and they all were getting everything on the menu, it breaks your heart, but all you can do, is allow them their choices and know that the raw food movement is indeed becoming mainstream, and that as we walk around, and people see us dissapearing before their very eyes (losing weight for those of us who are) then they start asking questions, and start telling other friends about it, and the message gets around.

the one thing that bothers me the most.............

patrons who do not put their shopping cart away.

I've seen cars get scraped and hit by these objects. I believe this is a "borrowed" item and should be put back where it belongs.
