HI AGAIN,
HAVEN'T VISITED HERE IN AWHILE. BEEN BUSY MAKING NEW AND WONDERFUL FOODS IN THE DEHYDRATOR. HUSBAND LOVES THE EGGPLANT BACON..HE EATS IN PLAIN...YUK...BUT ON RAW BREAD WITH LETTUCE AND TOMATOE IT WAS TOLERABLE :)
OKAY, I AM DYING TO MAKE YOU RECIPE FOR THE DONUTS, BUT I CANNOT FIND A DARN BANANA SQUASH ANYWHERE!!! I SHOP AT WHOLE FOODS AND THEY DO NOT HAVE THEM, AND I HAVE CHECKED EVERY AVAILABLE STORE AND NO ONE HAS THEM. IS THERE ANOTHER SQUASH I CAN PUT IN ITS PLACE? WILL THE DONUTS COME OUT TASTING LIKE DONUTS IF I SUBSTITUTE IT? ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED ;)
RAWCAMOLI IS AWESOME; CORN CHIPS WERE GOOD; SALSA, AH, DIDN'T CARE FOR IT TOO MUCH.
RAW CHILI WAS KICK BUTT!! EVERYONE RAVED ABOUT THAT!! STILL EXPERIMENTING. HOPE EVERYONE IS DOING WELL.
BLESSED BE :)

Hey there! Yes it's been a while since I've seen you here! Welcome back :D
When I first attempted that recipe (I'm figuring you mean that "crumb donuts" recipe at living-foods.com) I didn't have ANY squash on hand...all I had was a sweet potato and so I used that!!
It turned out great! I think it's moreso the coconut and the nutmeg that gives it that crumb donut FLAVOR. Now, don't go looking for it to taste like a Krispy Kreme or even a Hostess for that matter, but it was VERY close (to me and even to my daughter) to the crumb donuts we once loved.
But try it out....halve or even quarter the recipe if need be. I'd say that any squash would work, if it's too wet from the water content of whatever you use, add more coconut or ground almonds (going from memory here).

I noticed when I made these doughnuts, they came out terrible. Maybe I added too much nutmeg. They didn't taste at all like the real kind. The flavor was perhaps a tad similiar, but the consistency was not the same at all. They were so bad i had to toss them. I am sure I followed the recipie right. They were just sorta.....mushy
I hope yours turn out better then mine did. :)

Crystl-jade Yeah, you're right...the first time I made them they were kinda mushy...forgot about that. But the last time I made them during the summer, I actually put them in the dehydrator and that kinda made the consistency better. Thinking back, I even shaped them like the little donut gems...rolled them into balls, kinda flattened them a little and punched a hole in the middle with my finger then dehydrated them! :)
Again, they aren't gonna be like "real" donuts, but they came close enough to satisfy us at the time! :D

Well, I'm glad I'm not alone on this one, LOL!
Maybe this recipie could be modified so that the consistency is more like the real thing? Like adding some cashew flour or something?
Somehow one would think this recipie would be delicious. Perhaps I shall try making it again someday, using your suggestion, Rawkinlocks> thank you! :D

Tastes Like Hostess Crumb Donuts
by Lucy Yeh
1 cup raw almonds
1 cup very soft, pitted dates
1/2 cup finely shredded banana squash
1/2 cup shredded coconut
more shredded coconut for rolling
splash olive oil
vanilla
1-2 tablespoons nutmeg
sea salt
Put almonds in food processor and process to very fine pieces. Add dates, a little at a time. Add splash of olive oil, a little salt and a little vanilla. The mixture will look like very coarse meal at first, and then all of a sudden it will come together in one big ball.
Take the big ball out of the food processor and, using your hands, mix in the shredded squash, the nutmeg and the shredded coconut until it is all mixed in. Taste and add more coconut or nutmeg if desired.
Roll the mixture into small balls, and roll in shredded coconut to cover. Place on a plate in a single layer and chill in the freezer until firm. After they are firm, you can put them in a container; they will keep for a very long time in the freezer.

I used pumpkin (soaked overnight) since our local bakery used to make pumpkin doughnuts every year for holidays. I wasn't keen on it enough to make it again though. Does anyone have another recipe I could try?
