this is Jinjee and Storm's shopping list for them and their 4 all raw children.

Thought it might be interesting to see.

Storm goes food shopping twice a week in Santa Barbara at the farmer’s market. On those days he usually also visits a health food store, an organic produce stand, and an asian market (for the coconuts). Here’s an example of what he brings back for our family of 6 to last half a week:

Veggies:
10 ripe avocados
10 tomatoes
10 lemons
2 bunches parsley (for tabouli)
2 bunches cilantro (for tabouli)
1 head garlic
1 bunch leeks
2 heads of lettuce (for taco wrappings)
1 bag of sprouts
1 bunch celery
1 bunch carrots
1 bag mixed greens
1 bunch kale (for juicing)
1 bunch chard (for juicing)
10 hot peppers (jalapeño, habañero, chili) (for hot sauce)

Fruits:
4 crates oranges (40 lbs. each) (for juicing)
1 crate bananas (40 lbs.)
9 coconuts
5 bags of fresh in-season fruit (1 to 5 lbs. each)
6 pints berries

Nuts, Seeds, and Legumes:
2 lbs. Almonds, shelled
1 lb. Brazil nuts, shelled or 1 lb. Pine nuts, shelled
2 lbs. Sunflower seeds, shelled or 2 lbs. Pumpkin seeds, shelled
2 lbs. Macadamia nuts in the shells
16 oz. Almond butter
16 oz. Tahini
1 lb. Garbanzo beans

Condiments:
17.5 ounce bottle olive oil (lasts 1 week)
Half a lb. Celtic sea salt or Himalania Pink Salt (lasts 2 weeks)
12 lbs. Raw Unfiltered honey (lasts 2 to 3 weeks)
1 lb. Carob powder (lasts 2 to 3 weeks)
seasonings: curry, cayenne, italian seasonings, cinnamon, nutmeg (last 1-2 months)
3 packs Wild Atlantic Nori seaweed (from Eden Foods)

HA HA, I thought that too, even for 6 people, and that is ONLY for 3 days, of course there are 4 growing children there, but still.

It seemed like a lot of food to me too.

Remember guests too... when Piers and I visited they fed us well! A delicious salad of corn and many vegetables a delicious dressing! They are beautiful people. It's been said here before - their documentary is gorgeous!

Possibly they don't eat all that in 3.5 days... we buy lots of nuts and seeds sometimes but they last a long long time.

My first thought when I read the list earlier was $$$$$! Maybe not though if you know how to buy well. Conventional oranges are $4 per kilo here... I get organic for $0.95!

Cheers,
Sheryl

The first thing I thougth of was the money!! THEN, let's think about this from a health perspective....ALL of their DR. bills are probably non-existent (that probably includes the dentist too, which my children getting cavities filled is VERY expensive, even with insurance!!) Then I bet the farmers market is cheaper than a traditional grocery store...etc. I guess we all live by our convictions, and if you KNOW eating healthy is THE ONLY option, then you don't let the $$$ you spend bother you. I feel guilty myself spending money on expensive nuts, BUT, when I'm not eating raw, and eating CHEAP breads and such, I FEEL AWFUL, and my physical AND mental health is poor. Anyway, I'm sure everyone here agrees....just my .02 worth.

OH yeah, and if I knew my children would eat all that fresh food, I would buy it in a second just to improve THEIR health...I really worry about helping them make better choices, they are slowly improving their SAD diet, as they watch me, they don't look at oranges and fresh fruit as "yuck" anymore, and they are actually asking for more fruit and green smoothies. I would spend the $$ on fresh food because I KNOW it will effect them for the rest of their lives!!

We are a household of seven and have spent as much as $1000/month on groceries plus take out on our S.A.D. . I bet the expense wasn't great at all plus some items last them more than 1/2 a week. I've always found farmers market's to be economical.

Just me being vegetarian alone saves me on lunch cause I don't buy $4-6 value meals when all I really need is a 99 cent salad, free water and on a desperate day some 99 cent fries (Wendy's).
So when I get to my raw challenge I know I will save even more.

Plus if you buy what's on sale when in season you do better.

Today I got a head of cabbage for 29cents a pound ( total less than .90) and 2 16oz cartons of strawberries for .99 each, all this was at Publix, a grocer I usually avoid due to expense. I'll go back Friday for more strawberries and freeze them. The cabbage will get me about 3 raw wraps plus a cooked meal. The strawberries were for snacking today and then I'll still be able to make two mornings worth of smoothies w/ soy milk for all of us. My 1/2 gallon of Soy is usually near $3( to me that's expensive).

I recieve their e-mail as well. It was fascinating to see the list. I too would be interested in the cost of the purchases.

On another note: I saw their new DVD and really enjoyed it.

From today's newsletter:

"Many people asked how much we spent on the twice-weekly shopping list I sent out yesterday. About $250 to $300. So the monthly food bill for our family of six is about $2000-$2500. Remember – we’re six people, and four of them are still growing! Your bill might be only one-sixth that much! There are ways to bring that down too – growing your own food, sprouting, buying only produce that is $1 a lb. or less, buying nuts and nut butters in bulk from livingtreecommunity.com, and buying 2nds from farmers (2nds don’t look very nice but are often the choicest fruits). I once had a relationship with our local organic fruit stand. I saw the owner carry out boxes of fruit to the dumpster at closing time. So I asked her to put any fruit she was going to dispose of aside for me. I wouldn’t touch moldy fruit but if its just a matter of a few blemishes they can be cut off and then you can make smoothies or fruit salads with what’s left. I know people who make a hobby of asking people w ith fruit trees if they can pick some fruit. So many people have fruit trees and don’t eat the fruit. They feel bad that it just rots on the ground, so this is a way to help them out too. And shopping this way your food bill may increase but your health care bill will decrease. In the long run you are saving money and adding years to your life."

US too....our whole monthly income would hardly cover that. We are a family of 5...so I couldn't imagine what ours would be. My boys are getting older and eat ALOT! Anyway.....take care.

As I look at the list, it doesn't seem like a lot to me for 6 people... 4 of them growing. Remember, they rarely go out to eat. Alone, Bo and I go through 2+ cases of oranges a week. From what I saw, their children eat pretty much throughout the day. They all have a LOT of energy. Storm and Jinjee are physically active as well.

Within all that, we don't know how many others are being fed ~ guests, other family members and such.

Additionally, they are saving on utilizies since I assume they never turn on a stove. As I said before in my original post my family of 7 easily spent $1000/ month on groceries. This didn't included Chinese 2x/ month @ $45-75, takeout lunch at SAD Fast Food, and don't forget snacks at gas stations.

We also had over 7k in dental ( thank goodness for insurance) not including orthodontics.

We keep are medical pretty low, but that's on purpose with a lot of prevention practices, and now our improved diet is making a nil health care expenditure our new reality.

I noticed they bought a lot for juicing. I don't juice and prefer the food in the whole form. So I would see juicing as a "luxury food" for them. I would imagine someone could easily cut out amount needed for juicing and only buy the amount you need to eat. That should cut the bill down as well. :)

Revvell
03-16-2006, 09:55 AM
Actually, I see juicing as a major part of their food program as Storm, from my understanding, lives basically on oranges. With juicing, one injests a LOT of nutrients easier than eating the whole fruit/veggie with fiber.

Actually, in the most recent pics of Storm, he looks wayyyy better than 2 years ago when I saw him. My own perception, of course. :)

Personally, I use oj as a base for my smoothies and, as I said, just between Bo and I, we go through 2+ cases a week.

Each person has to go with what works for them and it will take a lot of trial and error ~ AND continuing adjustment ~ to find out what that is for them.

I don't think that is alot for 6 people at all. So far this week myself only I have gone though

18 tomatoes (salsa, and with cucmbers)
2 onions (salsa)
1/2 bunch of garlic(salsa)
1/2 bunch of celery (smoothie didnt' like, with dip)
20 oranges(smoothie)
15 bananas(plain, smoothie, almond milkshake)
1 bag of spinich(dip, smoothie)
1/2 a jar of almond butter(almond milkshake)
1/2 jar of tahini(almond milk shake)
3 beets(smoothie)
3 cucumbers(with tomatoes lemon juice and OO and celtic salt)
4 avacados ( made spinich dip and pudding)
6 lemons (I put the juice of 1/2 a lemon in my 2 liter jug of water everyday)
1 bunch grapes
Somedays I don't eat alot just a smoothie and my water but then otherdays I eat every 2-3 hours.

I notice the days that I exersie or have a rough night at work I eat more.
