Has anyone made a raw yogurt that they use regularly or are happy with?
Could you share the method?
In anticipation.....

Hi Indi, Just to be sure I understand your question, are you asking if someone here has found a raw vegan subsitute for yogurt? Because we don't discuss dairy here. (See the Mission Statement)

I've made a few fermented sunflower seed or brazil nut "cheeses" but honestly I've never found a recipe I was wild about, So if anyone here does have a good recipe for a raw vegan "yogurt" I'd be interested too.

that was going to be my question for clarification also. we don't advocate animal products.........unless you thought we are raw food eaters---eating raw meat, raw milk etc????

I use to be a Dannon gal years ago and like the texture of yogurt...

so far, i'm thinking soaked cashews may offer a really good smooth base. I'll experiment and let you all know! :)

Here's a thought... maybe cashews blended in rejuvelac, to give it a "yogurt" tang?

Yes, right. That's how they are supposed to get when you soak them. Then when you chop them up in a food processor and add a little vanilla, and a touch of agave, they make a raw vanilla creme topping for desserts that is awesome!

ps., Rejuvelac is Ann Wigmore's classic fermented "lemonade," made just from wheat berries and water.

I know you can make your own raw tofu from soy beans, although I don't eat soy, and I do know that you can make almond milk keifer and yogurt, although I've never done it.

You might just try making almond milk or cashew milk and allowing it to naturally turn, before it becomes cheese, then it might become yogurt.

I am aware that this is a Raw Vegan site.
As a Raw Vegan, it didnt enter my head to be that specific in my enquiry!

This is one of the few places in my life that I normally feel free not to prefix with RAW VEGAN!
However, I do understand that you felt the need to clear this up before proceeding!

RP I was thinking along the lines of using a nut milk.
Like you,I dont eat soy, so thats not an option for me.
Just wanted to do a little reserch, see if anyone has tried this as I just hate wasting ingredients!

I also figured that if raw vegan yogurt recipes were good dairy substitutes, I wouldn't have such a problem finding one!
I will try a small batch, see how it goes.....
Thanks for your responses :)

I don't know what the culture is that is used to make yogurt, but you might see if you could find some yogurt starter, see what is in it, I mean what kind of culture, and as long as it isn't something you don't want to eat, try adding that to the nut milk.

I've accidentally made some cashew yogurt this is how I did it.

I soaked cashews for a day or so, (a little long, I know) and then I put it in the blender, and added just enough water to make it really smooth, which wasn't much, and then I put the entire mess into a nut milk bag, (Alissa sells them on her site) and put it in a collander, hanging over a bowl, then placed it all into the dehydrator for a few hours, until it started to ferment.

then when it had a nice flavor, I used it as a kind of ranch salad dressing, but it was probably very close to a keifer,

You might wish to try this.

It wasn't sour, it was still sweet, I didn't add any flavorings or salt or dates to it, we just used it as is, with a little lemon juice.

It was very nice.

But I only made it that once, as I always wanted a good french dressing,

so you might try this and see if you like it.

good luck, and keep us posted.

Here are two recipes from the From SAD to RAW recipe list

1 cup almond milk
half pint of blueberries
4 bananas
half an orange
recipe by Joog

1 c. Almond milk
1/2 of juice from young Thai coconut
1/2 of meat from young Thai coconut
2 Medjool dates
1/8 c. honey (more or less to your "sweetness" preference)
1 Tsp vanilla extract
Sprinkle Cinnamon to taste
Ice to desired texture
Blend in blender til nice and creamy. If it's too liquidy, just add more ice and blend again. Use a spatula every so often to make sure all ice gets thoroughly processed.

A nice topping to this frozen yogurt would be raw cookies or some whole almonds or pecans.

YUM!!!!

(You could also make this mixture without the ice, pour into ice cube trays, freeze, then blend in food processor til creamy. Will be less thin that way, too. But either way is great!)

I have had raw yogurt, made from coconut - blended meat and water. I think the yogurt starter was not vegan though.

Cousen's has a recipe for Probiotic Yogurt:

Pulp of 9 young Coconuts
4 cupd water
2 teaspoons Probiotics

Sit overnight, room temp, in covered glass container.

I think the yogurt starter was not vegan though. No, regular yogurt starter would not be. But I think you could probably replace that with a small portion of a cultured vegan probiotic product, like a raw kraut or kimchee if the small amount of non vegan content was a problem for you. Personally I'm not that fussy. .
