Hello - I have been lurking around here for some time and have got lots of help everytime I visit. Wondering if I could have some help on this situation that may well happen to our family....

How do I manage being raw myself, and my family predominately raw, if we go camping for upto 2 weeks. I would probably have a small engel fridge but my family of 6 would eat a lot of food! Temperatures would mean fruit and veg would go off if not kept cool. Obviously this is a situation that would have to be addressed but... wondering if anyone can give me creative thinking within these confines? What to dish up to my family?

If we were camping - real camping - thenI wouldn't have electricity - there goes my food processor and juicer! If we did the campervan thing and had a generator we could possibly do this but I would doubt we would have the fridge space to hold that much fruit/veg for juicing etc. anyways.

I'm prattling on here - looking for ideas to toss around in my head

Aust.Belinda -- where are you going camping? Since I'm from the U.S., just a location won't probably help, so can you describe the type of camping (rustic, tent, or camper), resources (provisions available, ice, cooler, etc.) and the climate, etc.?

Ya know, the Boutenko family hiked for 4 months straight without carrying provisions. With that in mind, I'm thinking that something can be worked out for you!!

We are just tossing thoughts around at the moment but we are basically talking rural / Outback Australia. Anywhere from 2-4 hours from a town on bad, dirt roads. We could do tents, or we could look into camper trailer. I doubt we would do campervan due to the 4wheel drive required. Resources ... thinking we would take everything with us for the duration as far as food goes (no shopping trips in between), climate 30-35degrees Celcius - hot! I think we could get water from local stock camps etc.

I would think about taking as much fruit and veggies as possible, there are many that do well in the heat, oranges, apples, carrots etc.

and I would take as much dehydrated crackers, as you can.

also nuts will keep, just soak before eating (most of them)
raisins, dried figs, dried prunes, dried apricots, dried dates.

Also, you may wish to think about one trip to town during your trip, to pick up more veggies and fruits.

you can get a hand crank blender, if you feel the need for one, also you can get a hand crank food processor too, or even a chopper.

alnother thing that might work, is to have one person bring you out some food once or twice during your trip.

but my favorite would be to forage for wild edible foods, I'm not sure what would be available there, but you could check it out with a book or on line.
