Hello Everyone,
I have bee raw for a few weeks and I LOVE it!

There is an unusual incident that happened yesterday. I ate some sprouted lentils-dry lentils that I bought from a regular grocery store. I washed them. I sprouted them. They smell good and look good. As soon as I ate them I got sick! For 2 days! This happened a few weeks ago too, with the same bag of lentils that I sprouted back then. The dry lentils do not look moldy. Someone said that the non-organic lentils (and other non-organic beans) may be sprayed with pesticides or other chemicals. But it does not feel like pesticides. It feels bacterical. Chest pains too. Flu symptoms. Does anyone know about this? Now I am afraid to try even organic lentils. I am afraid that it is lentils. I am not mildly sick, I am very sick. Does anyone know anything about this?

Hi Geraldine.
Have you tried sprouting other things and have you had success with them. You will have to assume that it is just this bag and go on and try again. Give this bag to someone who wants to make soup with it.

If you did not buy lentils specifically for sprouting, then perhaps they are not safe to sprout. At least this is what I've read because other lentils may have been sprayed with something. I bought sprouting supplies from sproutpeople online, including lentils and I didn't get sick. Did you rinse yours while sprouting? I rinsed mine 3 times a day.

Hello,
I greatly appreciate all of your responses.

I rinse the sprouts, usually 3 times a day. It may have been 2 times on Saturday. What was really scary was the chest pains. It was a definate reaction to the sprouts, almost right away. I have had lentil sprouts over the years and never had a problem. The sprouts I had in the past were not sprouts that I sprouted myself.

I have sprouted flax seeds, almonds, cashews, wheat berries and chick peas successfully, without any reaction.

I have 2 cats in the house. I don't know if that has anything to do with anything. They pretty much do not like vegetables, but who knows what happens to those cat toes when I leave the house.

What is very curious about it is that this is the 2nd time with that bag of lentils. It certainly is a mystery that I would like to solve. I would like to think that I could eat lentil sprouts again someday.

I am still sick, but it is more like a cold now and I will probably be completely better by Friday.

If anyone learns of anything about this, could you please let me know?

Many thanks again!

Geraldine
