Hello all!

Let me start by giving you all some background on me: I live in Grand Cayman and am currently a vegan and am eating 75% raw right now. My goal of course is to go 100% raw. However, I know it's going to be a bit of a challenge living down here in the Caribbean. Caribbean countries don't exactly cater to a healthy lifestyle, much less a vegan or raw diet! Organic foods are nearly impossible to get a hold of here except for a few raw nuts and seeds and some tropical fruits. Even finding fresh raw produce can be a challenge from time to time as everything is shipped to the island and it's already several days old when it gets to the stores.

I'm also on a very limited budget here and have not yet been able to afford to buy a juicer or food processor and I have no way of getting things like a dehydrator or even sprouting trays. So, I'm going to have to learn how to improvise to make things work. Right now I'm sprouting in jars but can't find anything to cover the jars with when I drain the water so I have to try to hold the seeds in with the lids...very frustrating.

I am weightlifer and am getting back into running, so I will need to learn how to properly make a raw diet work so that I can continue to build muscle and maintain stamina. I don't doubt that it can be done, but I need to know how to make it work for me (I'm female BTW).

I'm also unfamiliar with how the withdraws will affect me. I'm a big coffee drinker, so I think my biggest challenge will be learning how to transition away from that.

So that's my story. I look forward to meeting and chatting with you all.

Welcome Pinenut,

Alissa will probably be able to help with the weightlifting, etc. She has always worked out and I think she has some supplements on her other site that she sells for this (www.alissacohen.com).

Happy having you here,

Pansy ;)

You can use anything to cover the sprouting jars. I personally use pieces of a netting fabric that is normally used as a window dressing. I just cut it in to squares. You can not place your jars at an angle without some cover so they will not drain properly.

Welcome Pinenut! I visited Grand Cayman recenlty on a cruise, and it is so nice there! I had a yummy smoothie at some smoothie place there and had a shot of wheatgrass (I was impressed with the printout they had on wheatgrass, too!). Anyway, so that place may be able to get you some supplies you need...

I can hunt up that printout to find what place it was, if you would like.

Were you there before or after hurrican Ivan (Sept. 2004)...because afterward pretty much every business on the island was destroyed and a lot of them didn't come back. Please do let me know the name of the place, though, it may have rebuilt or is still there. I've been hunting the island for healthy food sources and I've only come up with one place so far: Veggies Delights, a vegitarian/vegan restraunt on the water in George Town.

Thanks for advice sport! Window screening--DUH--I should have thought of that! :p

It was after Ivan, this January. I'm at work now, but I will try to find that paper later and post the name of the place. It was in some kind of complex on the second story. I will look for that printout.

I finally found the printout on wheatgrass I took from there, and they don't have their name on it :( . I'm sorry, but it was on the second story of a building and it was near the docks for the cruise ships (it also must have had something like 'juice' or 'smoothie' in its name or I wouldn't have made the hunt to find the place). I'm sorry I can't remember more.
