I probably never would have thought to try durian if I hadn't seen Alissa opening one on her video. I didn't realize they come to the store frozen until I bought the second one. The smell is pretty overpowering but the custard-like flesh is very tasty. I found that the more I ate it, the more I liked it. A couple of questions, though............

For those of you who have been fortunate enough to enjoy fresh durian, how different is it for texture and taste from the frozen?

Is there a secret to finding the right place among all those spines where it is more manageable to open? Alissa made it look so easy!

If you let it defrost, it's really easy to open. Right down the center of each pod (the center of the bulge) there's a line that it will open easily on. Sometimes you can just sink in your fingers and pull it open. Other times you may need a little knife.

I LOVE DURIAN TOO!!! One day I'm going to travel to Indonesia during durian season and eat it, aor maybe Thailand for the durian festivals. I'd love to try the red fleshed durian too!

Cheers,
Sheryl

Thank you for the tip on looking for the center of the bulge! That really helped, even though I had somehow managed to get one of the pockets open. With my next durian we'll see just how much I have learned. I didn't know there were red-fleshed durian. That sounds really interesting. I wonder if the flavour is also different.

I have entertained the thought of vacationing in Thailand. I'll have to try and time it for the durian festival. Maybe I'll see you there!
