Hi all,
Does raw carob taste different from roasted carob? I ask bc I don't like the carob powder found at my health food store -- which is generally roasted -- and am wondering if it's worth it to try the raw stuff?
If the taste is indeed different, I am going to go ahead and buy some from Alissa's store but if not, I don't want to waste my money.
Thanks

Thanks maydolphin, me too, that's what I don't like about roasted carob -- it's so bitter-tasting.
Any one else notice a difference in taste between raw carob and the roasted stuff?

raw carob is yummy! it is much sweeter than roasted carob, though id also say it's more grainy.

Cooked carob gives me a burning in the back of my throat - very bitter aftertaste even on good stuff. Fresh carob pods and really raw carob powder are completely missing that. I think it must be a side effect of the processing done to cooked carob.
Give it a try!!
Cheers,
Sheryl

great questions, raw carob, as other's have said, is not near as bitter as the roasted carob, and also you can finely grind it in a coffee grinder, put it on espresso and grind once or even twice, to a super fine powder.
I sometimes also add 1/2 raw carob and 1/2 raw cacoa, for Dragggon, I don't care for cacoa, I don't think it is really raw, so I don't eat it, but Dragggon loves them, I think it's becaue he has the caffeine thing going on, where I've kicked it, and don't like how I feel when I get any,
heart palpatations, hot flashes, racing pulse, breathless, light headed, then headache for two or three days. so, I stay away from caffeine.

Alissa's raw carob, that you can order from her website, is THE BEST raw carob I've ever tasted. It smells and tastes "alive". I've bought raw carob in health food stores, and it was nothing like this. It really is amazing.

Does anyone know if Alyssa's is processed in a gluten-free factory? (I'm assuming there is not barley malt in the carob itself...)

I notice the difference in taste for sure. Raw carob is much more earthy and flavorful than roasted.
I make carob smoothies this way:
5 cubes of ice
handful of cashews
cup of cold water
1.5 tablespoons of carob
handful of blueberries
1 banana
teaspoon cinnamon

I just ordered Alissa's raw carob and it is AMAZING. I highly recommend it! I also tried her agave nectar, and it is much better tasting than the kind I bought in the store.
My husband just decided to join me going raw for 30 days to see how it feels, and it's great to be able to make him some comfort items with these ingredients.
I made some raw candy balls last night by combining peanuts, tahini, carob powder, agave and sea salt, putting it all into the food processor until it's chopped up, and then rolled it into little balls like truffles. It was excellent - like eating little Snicker's balls. I put some in the freezer for today and will try those later.
I also made a shake with ice cubes, 2 bananas, 3 TB of nut butter (I used raw cashew but you could use any kind), carob powder, agave, sea salt, flax seed oil, and some water and it came out so smooth and thick like a chocolate milkshake.
He's going to have a harder time adjusting to this, because he was eating worse than me before and he is not as big a fan of mono-eating, so the comfort foods are helping him ease into it.

I love Alissa's raw carob. I always thought that roasted carob had the "burnt" taste. Now I don't have that...just the good carob taste!!

hmmm...
I ordered Alissa's, received it this past Friday but still haven't opened it yet...can you believe that?! Glad to see some positive responses on it. The last raw batch I bought, well over a year ago, turned me off completely...it was soo grainy, no matter what I used it in...all you could taste was carob carob and more grainy carob. Figured I'd give it a go again. Hope I like this one! :)
