View Full Version : Can a regular ol' nutritionist help me?
I have an appt with a nutritionist that works in my ped's office re: the dc and the gluten/caesin free diet. I DON'T WANNA GO!!!! :p I'm afriad to say we are raw-don't need DSS knockin' on my door again! I don't want her to attempt to sway us away from raw or say anything neg about it in front of the dc (they have to come with me for insurance purposes  ).
Do you think there's hope for this appt? I have a $30 co-pay....but ya never know-she might be totally groovy and totally dig the idea that my dc are on raw foods...
Just don't want to waste my time...and money.
what would YOU do?

There are a few things you can do:
1. Not go (don't know if this is feasible for you or not): I took my daughter to the dentist to get a tooth pulled because the permanent was growing in behind it and because she didn't have any cavities, they wanted to give her all these fluoride treatments and had me setting up appointments and gave me a prescription for this HIGH dosage fluoride toothpaste (since we don't have fluoridated water in our area) and I set up the appointments, acted like I was playing along and then when they called me to remind me of the first appointment for fluoride treatment, I just cancelled it.
2. Go and don't even mention that they kids are raw. If s/he asks what their diet is, tell her what they eat; "Oh, they eat lot's of fruit, they eat veggies (don't have to specify if they're cooked or raw), they eat wheat-free crackers (don't have to say "raw crackers"), they eat casein-free ice cream and drink casein-free milk, they drink juice". If you make things for them like nut burgers or veggie nuggets (like the ones Sweetgoddess posted a while back) then they eat burgers and nuggets! See where I'm going with this? So, you don't have to say, "They eat RAW this or that"...just say they eat "this or that".
3. If s/he does NOT ask you about their current diet (more than likely you will be asked, though) then just listen to his/her advice and then when you get home, take out of it what applies to what you're currently doing and what doesn't, toss it out of your mind and keep right on going with what you're currently doing!
Thanks-wish me luck! I've been "bullied" by drs on many occasions in their short lives (8 years) and I just hate goin' to a new place, like I've got to go in with full ammunition to defend our life. I hate being talked down, or when I'm treated like I'm making an uneducated attepmt at raising my dc. It just stinks to be in there feeling vuenerable, KWIM?)

Good luck Purl!
I was worried about it for nothing. She never ONCE asked what I feed them! LOL!!! She just gave me some info as to WHY the gluten free/caesin free diet helps dc with autism and a couple of lists of foods that may have "hidden" gluten or caesin. That's it! ;)

I'm glad everything worked out for you :) Although I have to admit, I would think that a nutritionist would ask what you are feeding them. Isn't that their job?
that's what *I* thought... but it really doesn't matter-we are going to a DAN! Dr in April/May and they treat ASD (autism spectrum disorder) dc thru diet, vitamins, and enzymes. From what I hear they are VERY thorough and ask all KINDS of questions. Last night the nutritionist asked if I felt I needed a follow up appt and I polietly told her "No, thank you." ;)
