i absolutly LOVE canoeing and try to get in as much as I can every summer. Haven't rafted yet but it's on my list of things to do this summer. Also on the list is learning to kayak.

I've done some wilderness camping, even in -30 in Northern Canada. We had to snowshoe in...I miss those days.

I LOVE all of it! LOVE being outdoors and active. I'm missing the mountains a lot, as I just moved to Dallas from Albuquerque, NM.

The mountains are the only thing I miss about that place, though! It's weird to think that I'll have to go on vacation now to go camping :)

Yup, we enjoy it all too - including any winter sports.

Snowshoeing, skiing, skating, rock climbing, hiking, canoeing, swimming, camping, cycling --- anything as long as it's active, fun and outdoors!

For fun outdoor pics, check out http://www.simplyraw.ca/livingproofs.php

I was raised by two very passionate environmentalists- and don't remember a vacation that didn't involve sleeping under the stars. thankfully, my parents instilled in me an equally profound love and respect for our Earth...I LOVE any activity outside!!! During college, I always had the trunk of my car stocked with camping gear for those spur of the moment excursions-- my favorite place was one that I had to swim across a lake to get to- which I always thought was so much fun and amazing in it's "secretiveness." Now that I have a daughter, I think about how stupid that was to do alone....how things change, eh?---

I love hiking in the general definition but have never done the official hiking with a pack. Kayaking is something I want to try this summer if nck and back allos.

Don't know how to swim b/c I refuse to be under water.

Snorkling would be fun but again, it'sunder water.

rock climbing would be the bombs!!!!!!!!!

Walkin'onWater,

Me too I love it :D . Back when I was in boyscouts and high adventure I got to go to northern Minnesota and then portaged into canada's boundry waters, I even drink right out of the lake, it was so AWESOME - AND BEAUTIFUL !!
I also went down to Florida Keys for a canoeing trip in the ocean. And going through the mangroves and seeing all these interesting birds and snakes and big bugs and the no seeums :mad: coz they have a terrible bit.
I've done all types of camping as well - all four seasons :D

karenisraw,

I love camping but I have not been able to do it much for a few years.

I've still gone a little bit but not all to the extreme like I used too!
I was a huge overweight whale for about 15 years and I couldn't do what I loved to do outdoors. Then I lost all that weight and now I'm finally eating properly and cleaning my body out so that I can do these outdoor fun things again :)

julesmoz,

That does stinks moving to the flat lands so to speak,
It's sorta like northern indiana it's flat - flat. Southern Indiana really hilly, woods, lakes and streams, rivers all close togather, (no mountains). Have to find select places to go free climbing. But trees are everywhere :D
I went to New Mexico to a place called Philmont. where for two weeks I went Hiking and backpacking and rock climbing and played in the snow on top of the mountain in "july", that was great!!

simplyraw,
Thankyou for the link that looks like so much fun!!
Have you ever heard of "out of bound courses" in Colorado?

I want to learn how to scuba dive, And take refresher courses in rock climbing, and learn kayaking - I've been pricing kayaks. Since I went to michigan and used some tandem old town kayak on a lake called deer lake. Being in the kayak was more serene than being in a canoe. :)
I been one time rafting in Virginia, but the river was kinda low - but i still had a great time :)

lane,
I know you there lots of places in indiana to go canoeing?

hey ml here's 2 links for ya that you can pick up some good stuff at low prices, plus some wordage,( is that a word?):

I used to be on a swim team when I was younger, I loved to go swiming and floating. Some people just need to learn to breath deeper to expand your lungs and then you can float. When I was a whale my flubber kept me afloat LOL... Here's a trick for you.. when you take your bathes let your head drop down in the water and as it's going down breath "out" of your nose. keep doing that for week or two until your really comfortable with it - even time yourself to see how long you can stay under water. What your doing is changiing your thinking from fear to fun :)
when i went to Floridae keys, we went snorkeling - was so neat - The water was like bath water so warm. I saw these little parrot fish pecking on the corral and eating little parts of it. Under water I also saw stingrays, jelly fish, tarpon, ( this fish are huge - human size), just so many things and multiple colors.
Under water snorkeling we saw this one fish, it was about 3 feet long and about the thickness of a football, it had strips on it. So we decided to follow it around some seeweed and across some vegetation and then through short cave,( you can only hold your breath so long :eek: ) after when went through the cave, it turned around and faced us then it opened it's mouth and showed us, that it wanted us to stop following it!!. It's teeth were like "JAWS TEETH", by the time it closed it's mouth I was on the surface and in the boat!!!!! .I'm not getting eaten today!!

I'm such a great speller - I have to keep a frickin dictionary handy! lol
Where's spell check when I need it :) Have you figured out how to get it to work on your page?

The place in the Keys that i went to was lower Maumgbree area.( I have to check this out I can't remember how to spell it. lol)

Are you getting a road bike or touring bike or mountain bike or do you know yet?

Hi everyone,

I love to hike and bike.

Do a lot out on the Cape. ( Cape Cod)

Ocean kayak is great and a very good workout. We paddle out along the cove here in the preppie colony and then make our way along the shoreline.

Snorkling is great off the coast of Puerto Rico. Also some great trails to hike and eco friendly.

Peace,

M.B.

I live in Michigan near a lot of wooded areas and take my dog "hiking" a few days a week. It's so beautiful. I am building my stamina quickly on raw and am sure I'll be able to "fartlek" (I think that's a runner's term for training on varied terrain-like the woods) for miles through the trails. Hey nice to meet chya.

There tons of woods near by me as well. And some times after I've gone half way a route i'll run back home through the woods also through varied terrian. Some time just for cardio and strengh training for upper body and legs I'll go tree climbing. I've spotted my next 4 tree's to climb all of the are 80 to 120 feet tall. Once I get to the top the view is awesome. ortherwise I have to drive about about 45 to 50 minutes to find some area's to free climb. So tree's are a great subsitute.

Hey! If you are still interested in the Grand Canyon, as a newly citizened Arizonian (I moved here almost two years ago), I would definitly do it! I've been there twice now and my goal is to one day hike and raft the entire thing. But while your in AZ if you have the time check out Geronimo's cave, and Sedona if you get the chance is one of the most beautiful exciting places I have ever seen. Its like something you might see in a dream. I went to Slide rock which can be crowded and dirty with tourists but still fun I would suggest trying to find "The Bridge" A little past Slide Rock and little known place. Its got some great cliff jumping! And hey if you ever come to the White Mountains in AZ you should look me up! There are the cutest little garden restuarants that grow their food in greenhouses and gardens right next to your table!

Yesterday i did a 2 hour cardio in the woods. I went climbing up a 500' foot hill in the woods the veiw was awesome, it was really windy and nippy, but I was having fun. Then went slidding down through the leaves and dirt. then climbing back up following some tracks by the deer populations. Once I got to the top I supermaned my way back down again, (while I was supermaning I smashed my cell phone face plate "oops"). Supermanning is a blast!! It's much better than just slidding down.
then I hiked back out of the woods. to flat land.

So I need to make some raw snacks coz he always gets hungry :rolleyes:

I have hiked Table Mountain, Wyoming which is just across a crevasse from the Grand Teton. I am looking at trying to climb Mt. I'm about an hour away from the beautiful Boston Mountains( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston_Mountains ) in northern Arkansas. The elevations are such that it snows up top(up to 2700') while it rains in the valleys(1250'). The predominant rock in the upper elevations is a sandstone( http://www.ozarkconnections.com/hemmed_review02.jpg )which has been sculpted by the wind and rain to make some truly beautiful scenes along with the pines. I have spent a bit of time there over the years and like to get down there while I'm on a break from bicycle training. There is supposedly some of the best wild ginseng growing down there. The waters are turqoise blue that is made possible from some mineral of which I do not know. There are even elk! Bear of course and ancient Beech Trees and moss gardens galore. The best whitewater between the appalachians and rockies and 500' bluffs for rock climbing. The tallest waterfall between the aforementioned locales as well(Hemmed in Hollow). The local historic history is fascinating (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~edgmon/cashbk.gif&imgrefurl=http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~edgmon/cshbk.htm&h=333&w=260&sz=60&tbnid=2_BwqjMLZVoJ:&tbnh=115&tbnw=89&hl=en&start=1&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dmossville,%2Bar%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3De n%26lr%3D%26sa%3DG ).

myssi,
This is a easy way to prep for a easy/ moderate hike say moderate distance of 30 miles. start walking daily, comfortable shoes first week. Second week get a small back pack to carry books in. Like a Jansport or kelty or columbia or L.L. Bean or whatever. Put a phone book in it with some water to drink second week. third week add more wieght - keep doing this until you get your self a good internal back pack and good pair of hiking boots. When you get your actual hiking backpack feel it full of gear or wood to simulate the weight that you would be carring if your were going to be going hiking and camping for a moderate 30 miles for a 2 day hiking and camping. Find a club out there and then find out when their next moderate trip is for and just do it.
Go online and find out if there's any body raw in your area that's in a hiking or canoeing or camping or whatever that you want to do. Have fun :D

Great Thread!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wanted to Bump your thread back since spring is here.

I've been blessed to live in several states and get involved in many outdoor activities. Camping, hiking, climbing, biking
My weight has prevented me from really pursuing more, my journey into raw as lit that desire again.

I've been wanting to get back into kayaking/canoeing. On the condition "When " I lose such and such. Well life's passing...............

So Monday we bought two 3 person canoes and did a ten mile run down our local river. ( Not the most scenic but this was a trial) It was wonderful!!! By we I mean my husband and twins in one canoe , My oldest, my dog, and me in the other. ( all w/ proper safety equip.)It took about 2 hours.

We've been scouting other rivers within an hour but they are running a bit rapid @ this time of year. So Tomorrow we are going to a Large Lake.

We plan on getting kayaks & doing the rapids ONEDAY, but for now I truly enjoy the quiet solitude Of the slow water.

We LOVE camping, hiking, canoeing, swimming. Another big fun thing to do is tubing. We like to hit the Guadalupe River or the Frio river at least once a year.
We also try to camp at least once a month. Ok....it's not really much of camping anymore because we got a travel trailer but we dno't stay in it except to sleep or when it's raining. Otherwise, we are out enjoying nature.

Thanks for the links. Those are some beautiful photos!

I'm not sur how Dragggon does it. But How I do it is old pair of tennis shoe's and pair of jeans with a belt and a shirt optional depending on how tough your skin is, and life jacket and helmet,(optionable). jump in and try to keep your feet in front of you to sorta act as a spring / buffering for your body ~~ it's definitely a rush!!!

Dragggon,

We wear wetsuit tops and tennis shoes so you dont get to scraped up and have even worn helmets when the water was high
a lot of dry towels help in the winter time too the main thing to rember when the water gets fast is to relax and not panic
I have a buddy who has designed hand paddles we use to help us steer.(I am in his white water promo video.)
Waiting for the invite to try them skydiving after I saw the prom video he had made and talked to the divers who said it was such a rush and the paddles were like wings you could steer with little effort

Dude, that sounds really cool :D , except for the winter time burrrrrrrr in the water. I have a friend of mine who's a master jumper, in the sky diving areana. He has this special suit that has these small wings and webed hands that he uses to steer himself as he's diving - sorta interesting design.

do you have webb address to see you doing the white water ridding?

I've been 'interested' in the outdoors since my father first took me camping as a young pup. I've hiked and camped in at least half of the states. Spent a week canoeing / camping in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area when I was 9, and again when I was 14. Have done a wee bit of kayaking in Hawaii, Washington and off the coast of Tofino, Vancouver Island, Canada. Oh, I went sky-diving about 10 times, if that counts as 'outdoor sports.'

This last year I decided to really understand more about outdoor living skills. I had read Tom Brown's (http://www.trackerschool.com/) books on the subject, and wanted to really understand what it meant to live off of the land, etc. I am now a student at Jon Young's Wilderness Awareness School (http://www.wildernessawareness.org). Of course, a part of the classes are on how to obtain food when in the wilderness (and some of that is hunting animals). It is an incredibly complete year-long program which covers the following, and more:
* Plant/Tree/Animal/Bird ID
* Wild Edibles
* Ecology
* Understanding Bird Language
* Tracking and Trailing
* Shelter Making
* Primitive Water Purification
* Cordage/Plaiting/Matting
* Primative Tool Making
* The ways of the Scout
* The Art of Mentoring (with the school's Youth and Community School (http://www.wildernessawareness.org/youthProg.html))
* ...

I've been living in a three bedroom yurt with my wife and two wee children. Most days I am at school, or home on our 5 acres developing my nature awareness or journaling my Kamana (http://www.wildernessawareness.org/kamana.html) homework. (And playing with my wife and kids!!) There are many days where I am gone on an overnight with my class (http://www.wildernessawareness.org/WARPRes.html), with a half dozen week-long field trips. Every day I am outside, spending time listening to nature and getting a sense of her rhythms.

It has been a most profound year. When my wife and I return to Eugene, Oregon (after I teach at Wilderness Awareness School's Summer Youth Camp programs (http://www.wildernessawareness.org/youthCalen.html)) we'll be developing a nature-based preschool to open in the Fall of 2007.

Eating raw has been a way for me to get more intimately in touch with the plant kingdom. I have been incorporating wild edibles each day into my diet as well. I have tasted non-raw a few times, since beginning my 30-Day raw challenge. Each time was with my school, learning more about what survival options there are, should I be in a situation where my intake of food meant my survival. The three animals I partook of were killed by me. In the process I became much more intimately in touch with the animal kingdom and what life and death means. It is true that we must all kill things to consume and continue to live. I am incredibly thankful for the plants who give their lives so that I may sustain mine. And I am thankful for the animals who have given their lives so that I may sustain mine.

Thanks PATH301 for bringing this conversation up!

when I was younger 9 (when I started) we had moved to the suburbs instead of in the city, and everything was at least 1 mile away, so I used to walk everywhere, I did that until I got my first car at age 19 (no money for a bicycle) and I was in pretty good shape, could get pretty much anywhere, in about 10 to 15 minutes if we hustled, LOL

then I liked to hike and walk, and all that, until I met this guy, that I ended up marrying for 12 years, and he was an outdoor enthusiast, he could never just have fun, it was always a big deal, so we went hiking in Mount Rainier, with full 50 pound packs over sky bridges, and in the pouring down rain, that was the LAST time I ever hiked, I said NEVER again!, and I meant it, it's my Taurus Moon, showing. very stubborn, LOL

But, I do like to boat, (row) and canoe, and picnic, and gather wild edibles, and walk in our meadow, and our forest, and garden, and build structures, and play outside, and swim, and I've never scuba dived, as my eardrum ruptured when I was very little, and it causes me pain when it gets too much under water presure, just under water swimming causes challenges, so no diving, no scuba diving either.

I skied ONCE, so you know how much I liked it. I use to bicycle on my friends' bike when we were kids, but they always scared me, probably because I was very short, and my friend was very tall, and I only rode the bike a few times, never really had a bike until I was married at 19 years old, and I was working 10 miles away, so just didn't get into that.

I think white water rafting could be fun, and kayaking, and wind surfing, and all that, I'm not bid on motors, so speed boats and water skiing just isn't for me either.

I pretty much like to be quiet and reflect, to sit in nature, and draw or write, that's about it for me. I like to comune with the animals, but Dragggon, is really Dragggon Dolittle, or so we all call him, as the animals sure love to visit with him.

If there is an animals anywhere around, they will come and visit with Dragggon while he is outside.

Oh, yes, and I camped every weekend, for 12 years, while we were building our castle on the island, and that was fun, I always liked camping, there is something so soothing about sleeping under the stars, and I still think going to the bathroom OUTSIDE, is sooooo much better for you and the environment. LOL
plus a campfire alway seems so homey, and smells so good.

hey Draggon,
I was going through reading some of your posts. And you said that you like to climb anything you can. Well I don't have any mountains here to climb on so I have to get creative with the trees in my area. I do have some access to some lakes and a river. There are some rock quarries that I've done some free climbing in, but they're not near by where I live. Here's some pic's on my latest climbing challenge and a shot of the river from about 500' foot hill in the woods :

My dream is to hike across the USA on either the Continental Divide of the Pacific Crest Trail. That would be so fun. I love outdoors and hiking.

I like to have fun outside.

I've been scuba diving for a number of years. My dad used to be a diver in the Canadian Navy and now my entire family dives. We even got my husband into it.

We currently live between two popular outdoor areas in so cal, Big Bear and Idyllwild. We do a lot of day hiking and camping. I'm trying to get my husband into backpacking.

I'm also a marathon runner and am starting to really get into trail running. Trail running is so much harder though! Ouch! I've done a couple of trail races now and they left me much more burnt out than what a marathon does. :)

Hey MangoMan, I just stumbled upon the Wilderness Awareness School's website the other day. Their program sounds amazing!!!!! You are so fortunate to be engaged in such an experience. Good luck with your preschool. I, too, plan on opening a nature-based school someday. I am currently working as an environmental educator at the NJ School of Conservation. It's an incredibly fun and rewarding job :D

I can't wait to do some backpaking this summer. Although I'm interested to see what foods I will end up filling my pack with, now that I'm raw! Hmmm.. anyone have any suggestions?? :p

Misty*Mountain -- Wow! "Each academic year the NJSOC provides environmental education programs for nearly 9,000 elementary/secondary school students, and nearly 1,000 teachers from about 100 schools." What a Fantastic school you're a part of! Lucky you as well!

How long of a backpacking trip will you be on? I would think that you wouldn't necessarily be packing a heavier pack than when you were non-raw... no pans to carry, no fuel, no stove ... sounds good! I seem to need more protein when I'm hiking .. and potassium foods would be good (though the common potassium food, bananas, might get smooshed a bit .. and you'd want to pack out the skins) .. hmm, what other things should you consider when hiking ... not sure. Does sound like much fun!!

Yeah, NJSOC is a pretty awesome school. Working here has definately been a huge learning and growing experience for me. I would love to continue to work here next year, yet I have a strong desire to pursue a degree in environmental studies and education.. so I'm planning on going back to school next year. I really like Evergreen State College's teaching method and philosophy, so I'm thiking of applying there. I think it would be cool to get some college credit through the Wilderness Awareness School, as well. There is so much I want to learn about Gaia!!

I don't really have any solid backpacking plans just yet, but I'm thinking I'll do a weekend here and there.. been meaning to check out Maine in the summertime! I'll just have to bring a lot of nuts and dried fruit, and some veggies here and there :D I would also love to learn about foraging for wild edibles-- that would be awesome!

I was just checking out your journal.. great pics! I love the one of you pretending to gnaw on the tree like a beaver! lol. Beaver are such fascinating animals.. there is an active lodge right near us and I finally got a glimpse of a real live beaver just the other day. It was such an exciting experience..

I thru hiked the Appalachian trail in 05'. I love hiking and backpacking. However I found it hard to stay raw on the trail. Does anyone have any ideas on how to do that. I found produce hard to pack for a week at a time. It would be fine for a few days but then would get beat up or go bad. Not to mention produce is HEAVY! :)

Wow you did the AT :cool: too cool.
I just finished reading A Walk in The Woods .

I have the Same problem. I have to make short trips, day hikes etc. I stay as raw as possible. Don't know enough about wild vegetation to chance eating as I go, I wouldn't trust anything off a trail like the AT. Never know what's on it. :rolleyes:

I do carry dried veggies (imake a soup like mix), seaweeds, & fruit and nuts along with some fresh. It still limits my distance besides the ^in water.
I tried doing greenpowder drinks, but they make me sick to my stomach. I was told by a friend to do a acv/agave & water fast but I really do not think that is wise at all.

I know I'm late to this thread but better late than never. I love outdoor activities. Four season camping, hiking/backpacking, canoe tripping, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, geocaching!, etc.

Some highlights from recent years include: canoe tripping/backpacking all over Western Canada (including the West Coast Trail), backpacking the Grand Canyon, Bryce/Zion, backpacking in Costa Rica, Hawaii (surprisingly a lot of mini backpacking trips you can do to get away there), Bowron Lakes canoe circuit, Murtle Lake canoe tripping, Yosemite, Canyonlands/Moab, the list goes on an on.

Next planned trip is to canoe the Green river (Utah) in May.

So much awesome fun to be had outdoors! I love it!

Any Rawers in BC want to go on a Raw canoe or backpack trip sometime???

I love the woods, water, and mountains!

Growing up near the Adirondacks, I fell in LOVE with hiking! I remember the first peak I climbed, what an awesome feeling standing up there, looking at the view.....and for the next 24-48 hours....I had a feeling of "high", my friend and I called hiking "good karma". Everytime I think of hiking, I can only think of that peaceful euphoric feeling I had.

We will be moving back to that area in about a year, and I'm very excited to get back into hiking, kayaking and snowshoeing (we didn't get any snow this winter :( ).
