View Full Version : Chocolate Pudding Comparisons?

Hi! I've been lurking for a while, but finally decided to post after watching one of the steaming videos on the GreenChefs website. I watched the Chocolate Mint Pudding video and just had to wonder, how does the coconut version compare to the avocado version of chocolate pudding? It seems so much simpler to me to pop open an avocado than go through the hassle of opening a young coconut.... is the taste or texture really superior enough to warrant all that extra effort - and expense?
Anybody who has made both willing to toss out some opinions?

Thanks!

I've never tried any raw puddings made with coconut for the same reason you mentioned fuzzywater but every recipe I've tried that used avocado has been wonderful. And yes, it sure is easy to make chocolate pudding this way and the texture and flavor is very good.

Well, I will admit it,

I hate avocados, now I also will have to admit, I've never tried chocolate avocado pudding, I just hate that slimy greesy texture, it makes me want to gag.

Now with that said, I've also never tried the chocolate coconut pudding, because I have an aversion to chopping off my hand or finger, yes, I've seen it done, so, I will NOT attempt to cut open a young coconut or any other kind myself, I will let other do it, and if they survive, then I may eat the flesh of the coconut, unless it is covered in their blood. (yes, I've seen this too)

Okay, so how do I make chocolate pudding?

I make it with cashews or almonds, and it is delicious, add some dates, or agave, some cacoa beans, or carob powder and cocoa powder a dash of salt, and a tad of cinnamon, and yummm

Thank you both for the input. I'm definitely a choclaholic, so raw chocolate pudding is calling my name in a major way... I have some avocados to play with tomorrow, and if that doesn't satisfy the craving, I'll try rawpriestess' idea with the nuts!
Speaking of, rawpriestess, have you ever tried it with pine nuts? I know they're more expensive, but I'd bet it would yield a nice creamy pudding.... hmmmm....

Going back to my chocolate freezer fudge to ponder a bit....

Well folks, I made the chocolate pudding BOTH ways and BOTH are extremely DEEEELICIOUS!! :D :D

I really loved it with the avocado and Rawpriestess, I KNOW how you feel about them but I PROMISE you would not know there was avocado in it!!

It was so creamy and smooth and GOOD. Now mind you, I didn't use carob, I used organic cocoa powder so I can't vouch for how it would be with carob...but this stuff was so good...my kids even liked it!

I don't have my Vita-mix (yet, getting it soon! :D ) so when I did it with the cashews, I had to add water a little at a time and blend, blend, blend, blend some more, blend...to get it really smooth. But it was still delicious!

I am making more today!

I don't like pudding or avacados but I LOVE THIS PUDDIN!!!!! I can't get over how good this taste. I only made it to try out my organic coca powder and since it was only a few ingredients I tried it and LOVE IT!!! I have made it a few times and will be making some tonight :D

I make it with avocados because the young coconuts are too hard to find where I live and too $$$. Having said that I love chocolate, really, and I love avocados, always have, but my children DO NOT. Every time I make the avocado chocolate pudding my children eat it all right away - that is, if they can get some away from me! If you need the recipe, let me know.

Maraw, your pudding looks so nice and smooth.

I made the pudding with avocado last night but didn't care for it. I don't particularly like avo's myself and I also didn't care for the carob.

Maraw - is that recipe in Alissa's book? What page? (My sis has my book and I'll call her for the recipe.)

Thanks for the pics. I was not interested until I saw them!

I just found this: It's created to be a Breakfast Brain Food:
Chocolate Pudding

http://www.rawcuisine.co.uk/recipes/chocolate-pudding/

300ml hemp seeds soaked overnight in water
juice of 3 oranges
zest of 1 orange
3 dried figs, soaked overnight in water
3 dried apricots, soaked overnight in water
50g sunflower seeds, soaked overnight in water
50g pumpkin seeds
12 walnuts, soaked overnight
3 bananas
½ tsp coconut butter
2 tsps raw chocolate powder
2 tsps cacao nibs

Optional:

handful goji berries
1 tsp maca
1 tsp green hemp powder
½ tsp bee pollen
Currants
Blueberries
Blackberries
Pear
Kaki/Sharon fruit
Fresh coconut
Hazelnuts, soaked
Soaked sesame seeds

Drain the hemp seeds and blend with the orange juice and some water from the soaked dried fruit as necessary. Strain and squeeze through muslin (a muslin bag is easiest) to make hemp milk. Drain the soaked ingredients and blend all the ingredients together until smooth. Serve with fruit such as cherries, raspberries, mango and/or a little yoghurt or kefir. Ground hazelnuts are also delicious with this recipe.

This recipe provides a comprehensive range of fats and proteins, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins in an ideal form for the body. It was originally created by Tish and Tony Wright as brain nutrition. The recipe seems to have a life of its own and keeps adding ingredients to itself. As a breakfast it can put you in the right frame of mind of the day. Ideal for children. It is also a perfect dessert mousse or chocolate sauce. You can freeze it as delicious totally healthy ice-cream ready for friends dropping in. Obviously you can vary the amounts of the ingredients to your taste.

I tried MaRaw's puddin tonight with the avocados as my first raw recipe. All I can say is YUM. This is even better than the "regular" stuff. I gave some to my kids without telling them what it was made from and they even loved it. My husband loved it too! You just have to try it.

Her web site is www.therawtable.com (http://www.therawtable.com). (hope I did that right)

BTW, I am new here and have been lurking about reading your posts. I have been sick for two weeks and somehow this "raw" thing kept popping up while I was doing some "surfing" on the web. It just seems like the right thing to do. It became even easier after someone posted that horrible chicken video of KFC! My husband is wanting us to go raw too. This is amazing. You would just have to know what a meat and potatoes man he has been. So we are starting our raw journey here. I will be ordering Alissa's book in a couple of weeks but until then I'm gleaning recipes from this board.

BTW, MaRaw, RawPriestess and Rawkinlocs: I LOVE your recipes! Thank you.

Now y'all run off and try that puddin. It's so wonderful. Truly. My first experience with raw was bliss. Go on. Try it! :D

Love,
Kelly

I have made the pudding; did not tell anyone it had avocados. Everyone loved it. Surprise. We hear avocado in pudding and everyone goes huk! and they taste it without knowing it and they all love it. Power of our 'brains'!

I've made a chocolate mousse with avos, and it was soooo good. I also tried it frozen...YUMMY! I froze it in heaping spoonfullls! I think I got the recipe off this sight. Banana search "chocolate mousse". I will search maraws sight and see how the recipes compare.

I found the recipe for the mousse that I've made before.
1/2 cup pitted soft dates
3-4 TBS maple syrup or honey
1TBS coconut oil (optional)
1 1/2 tsp non-alcohol vanilla extract (I didn't use this because I didn't have any)
2 1/2 cups mashed avos (about 3 med. avos)
3/4 cup carob more or less to taste

Soak your dates to make them soft (about 5-10 minutes) Drain and set aside, saving the soak water.
In a food processor, blend the dates, maple syrup(or honey, or agave), coconut oil and vanilla until smooth.
spoon in the avos and blend until smooth. Add a few tablespoons of soak water if needed to aid blending. Then add the carob powder and blend until smooth. Keeps fresh for several days (it won't last that long, trust me)

After all the blending, I froze this in heaping tablespoons....YUMMY! It made a nice, thick, rich, decadent dessert!

Enjoy,
Wendi

I am guessing the picture isnt the real thing?
I have made it many times and MANY ways and I have never made it to look like that..
How do you make it?

hmm this sounds good....and it would be a great snack to bring to school and such. I just can't seem to find raw carob powder and the only cocoa powder I have seen is hershey's (and Im guessing that isn't raw) arrrgh I wish sooo badly I had all these ingredients. My mom winces when I pick out a lot of raw fruits and veggies and nuts--she told me that needs to stop :(. I love my mom, but someone adopt me at meal and snack times :p. Ok ok that's terrible, I'm sorry...but honestly I'm ashamed to say there is a level of seriousness in there. anyway thanks for the ideas.

and Maraw, your daughter is adorable and beautiful!!

oh and does anyone have a really simple recipe for pudding? I can't get things like coconut and agave nectar and cocoa nibs, etc...avocados I can do

Cripes.

I don't mean to be rude, but people have had their children taken away because they were feeding them a vegan raw diet.
BUT it is okay to NOT let your children eat raw fruits, veggies and nuts???!?!?!? !?!?

Lunar, try MaRaw's pudding. It really IS as good as the picture looks. My kids eat this up. My daughter (10 yo) didn't believe me when I told her that it had avocados in it. I had to show her the recipe first. ;) Give it a try. And truly, if you can not get all raw ingredients, do the best you can with what you have. 100% is a goal, don't give up just because you can't meet that goal perfectly. ANYTHING is better than nothing. ya know? Just my wee little opinion.
You will love this. We are having it again tonight. It's even richer tasting than "regular" to me. I plan on making it to bring to our potluck on Shabbat to see if anyone notices a difference.

Have a blessed day.

2nd day 100% raw. YEAH!!!!! :D

oh and does anyone have a really simple recipe for pudding? I can't get things like coconut and agave nectar and cocoa nibs, etc...avocados I can do

I made a simple raw pudding last night
I used:

1 banana
1 mango
1 date
Cashews (didn't measure)
Squeeze of lemon

processed it in the food processor. topped it with shredded coconut.

Also you could make a lemony pudding (it is in Alissa's book)
it calls for:

1 cup dates (pitted and soaked, NOTE I soak them first to get them soft, then pit them)
1 avocado
2 whole lemons, peeled

Place all ingredients in a blender. Blend until smooth and creamy.
Ignore the green color caused by the avocado. :D

You can really make ANY pudding you want with fruits, nuts and dates. You can use any kind of nut and any kind of nut. Also, you don't have to have nuts.. you can use fruit and avocado.. fruit and fruit.. etc...

No no I completely agree. But I can kind of understand since my problem is supposedly eating too healthily. Yet this is different. Eh I wont get into it..I just don't want you to think she's some evil mother lol. I know she loves me and she's just concerned about me but I can't take it. I love raw fruits and veggies and nuts...wouldn't most parents be happy about that? I know I know, she's just worried and scared...she used to always make sure that we ate our fruits and veggies...now she tries to stop me...wow I'm pretty confused and lost right now..sorry I'm talking in circles.

ChaiLife~ I was thinking of trying Maraw's pudding :). Thanks for the suggestion :) What can I use instead of agave nectar (no honey) and hmmm maybe is there maybe another flavor? or i'll have to wait until I can get some carob or cocoa powder...

Lunar*Fey, I am not sure about a sub on sweetener. maybe dates? Do you have any of those? How about some stevia, though I think you will lose a lot flavor-wise.

If you don't have stuff for a chocolate pudding right now, you might want to try this one:
Sunset pudding
from Shazzie.com

2 bananas, peeled
1 mango, skinned and stoned
10 strawberries
2 dates, stoned (optional, because this is a very sweet pudding)

Chop the dates. Put everything in a food processor and blend until it looks like a pudding.

If you soak dates in water you can make date paste which is a good sub for a sweetener. After they've soaked for a few hours (or however long you can wait ;)) blend them up with a bit of the water to form a paste.

Honey
stevia
bananas - GREAT in puddings
dates
date paste

I've done both puddings and me and the family LOVE them both. The one from GreenChefs website IS, I repeat....IS....worth making. I make that one for friends and events or a special family night treat. I make the basic avocado one when I'm pressed for time and need something quick.

Lunar*Fay: Talk to your mom and ask her if she would give you a 'trial' for 2 months? Tell her to get you a few staples, Dagoba? powder chocolate Raw? and container of Agave instead of a bag of sugar, dates instead of candy bars, fruits and other veggies and no chips, cereals, other 'junk' food. This way she won't have to spend extra on groceries for you. Make a list of all the 'unhealthy' snacks or chips or cookies you buy and make a list of what you would like to substitute them with.

Ask/tell her that you would like to just check this out for a short while. If it does not work you promise you will quit.

I KNOW IT WILL WORK AND SHE'LL BE AMAZED AT THE RESULTS. Tell her that on this diet you won't have to buy deodorants, expensive shampoos--use honey to wash your hair and lemon juice to rinse. You won't have to buy moisturizers and creams. Won't need make up, your skin will 'glow' bautiful! So in so many ways you can tell your mom the money you spend on the food will be saved on all the products that you won't have to buy, that we needed to cover up dry skins, and odors. etc.

Tell her that whatever you spend on any make up for 2 mos, you'd like to trade on some foods on your list.

I promise that if you tell her it's temporary (remind her again) she will not worry as much or be scared that you'll starve to death! Have Fun on this RAWsome Trip.
