I have been making tahini with the "mechanically hulled"certified organic sesame seeds from my HFS, which I assumed were raw. However, I noticed that when I tried to soak and sprout and dehydrate them, they would not sprout, which leads me to believe they are probably not raw--also, I was told by another raw-fooder that the hulled sesame seeds are steamed, and when I tried to purchase raw tahini from the HFS, its labelled "raw" in quotations with an explanation on the back that hulled sesame seeds are warm temperature dried so its not really raw....

I tried making tahini with the unhulled ones tonite, but they are just so bitter.... is there a mail order source for the truly raw hulled ones that anyone knows of?

thanks

Health food stores aren't generally good places to buy raw supplies -- whether bulk or not. Do you have any other resources in your area? If not, have you tried Nature's First Law? There are probably lots of other online sources, but I don't know about many of them as I buy almost all of my raw stuff locally.

Best of luck!

Hulled sesame seeds are listed as acid forming and unhulled ones are high on the list as alkali forming so if you can try to use the unhulled ones and add some sweetner it would be better.

If you want to sprout them you have to have seeds with the hulls intact. Even if they are raw, without the hulls they won't sprout.

Hope that helps!
