View Full Version : Considering going raw but confused

I have been reading so much on this site, but I'm still confused.

I was a vegetarian for a while and during that time I felt incredible. However, since I became pregnant I started to consume meats and other foods that I know my body does not agree with: sugars, junk foods, lots of starches.

I also fell off my last attempt to do a long-term fast. I completed only 5 days, but intended to do 21.

Now, I'm here. I understand that fruits, veggies, nuts and sprouts can be consumed, but what confuses me is how can foods be "raw" yet some of the recipes require cooking? (yeah...silly question I know).

My reasons for making these changes is that I struggled with anorexia/bulemia for years and never realized it. My teeth are horrible, my health is not great since my son was born and I went from being an underweight women to being overweight.

I do not want to pass on poor eating habits to my son and I also don't want to be unhealthy.

Please, help me understand.

BTW, I'm going to order Alyssa's book, but I'd like to have a better understanding, before I go grocery shopping.

Hi Webby. Raw foods do not require cooking. There is no cooking!! I am not sure where you came across that idea...?

Alissa's book definitely is your best bet for an overall and easy to grasp understanding, as well as a complete walk through of how to eat raw.

Welcome to the forum! :)

Webby,

Many times recipe books are referred to as raw cookbooks ... yeah -- confusing. But as Sweet Goddess said, there is no "cooking". As Doe said, dehydrating is the raw form of cooking, so you can get some of the same types of food textures you were used to. Nice when you are first beginning.

There are heaps of great recipes in Alissa's book. I'm sure you'll love it. It is the perfect book for getting started.

The key is, find some things you really like, and eat eat eat. You'll be amazed at all the wonderful tasting food out there.

Welcome to Raw!!!

Thanks for the response and welcome :) BTW - you have been a great inspiration to me while I have lurked.

This recipe is what lead me to think that cooking is sometimes involved:

Mashed "Potatoes"

6 C chopped cauliflower
1/4 c flax oil
Spike All Purpose Seasoning to taste

Process cauliflower in a food processor with "S" blade, chop until "grainy". In a large pot, slow cooker, or electric skillet on
the lowest temperature, add oil, spices and cauliflower, stirring and tossing until coated and warmed to 105 degrees. Serve
with Mushroom Gravy.

Doe and Leavamsg, I think I understand now. I mistook warming for cooking.

Ok, you all have definitely made me see the light; I need to order the book and the DVD. I think that a "clean break" would be farely simple for me, as I had been a vegetarian and actually prefer my veggies raw and crunchy. I'm not sure that I'm going to have my son eat raw yet, so hopefully I won't cave in while cooking for him and DH.

Thank you all for indulging a newbie :)

I found it here: http://www.living-foods.com/recipes/mashed.html

The recipes are wonderful, but I guess you have to be careful that the directions are not misleading.

Well, I'm going to try to get the supplies that I need to go raw. Hubby will be out of town for a week, so it may be easier to transition whilst he's away :D
